Hi,
My MEC fan seems to have got progressively louder over the years. I'm hoping
to start tracking in the same room as my MEC. I heard a replacement fan may
be all that's required. Can anyone recommend something quiet to do the job.
Any tips on quieting down pcs (on the cheap!) - e.g. iso boxes, etc - most
welcome.

Try PAPST 80mm 12V fans. (made in germany)
There are two interesting models:
PAPST 80mm, 12dB, N/2GLE
PAPST 80mm, 19dB, N/2GMLE
All are top quality, excelent airflow and quiet.
Note that lower noise means slower spin speed...
....so I think 12db (decibel) model which rotates
at cca1500rpm is ok for most MECs.
But, if your MEC is crowded with expansion cards (4 or more)
, go for 19db model (cca2000rpm)
They are not cheap, but they are good.
Also note that a little soldering must be made
to move connector from old fan to new...
Papst has 3 wires:
Blue (-) minus
Red (+) 12v plus
White (rotation) - N/C on paris psu.

Havent pulled it apart yet, but should be pretty easy I would imagine,
compared to a computer. If its a solder in, you may need some experience
here, and if its not marked you may need a voltmeter.

nope just the 9 screws on the side and the 4 fan screws.s.
