It's all debatable. I think the cold war still brews between these two companies
and their personalities.
MS Office is what MS has on Apple. Apple needs MS Office to survive in the
business world. MS once again, is currently dangling MS Office over Apples
head. They are F...ing with Apple on XML compatibility. They are stalling
Apple just like they did in 1997, and many other times in the past. I'm
sure Apple is working on an Office suite.
The real kicker would be if Apple came out with an Office suite of software
for PC and Mac that blew away MS Office, then gave it away for free. That
would be a play right out of Microsoft's kill Netscape play book. Then Apple
made it possible to run any PC software on Mac OSX without Windows. The
last nail would be licensing a PC version of there OS to everybody and selling
it retail. The latter is not likely to happen.
Since I'm talking in fantasy-land, I'd like to see Apple buy SUN, and charge
MS through the nose to license JAVA. It was once rumored, but that's not
going to happen now either.
Oracle developed over 40 enterprise software programs for the Mac in the
past. I know it would be getting in to bed with the devil, but I like to
see Apple drop their prices on servers and team up with somebody like Oracle
to take on MS on the enterprise front. Not likely to ever happen.
Apple is now Apple Inc., a consumer products company. I think there happy
being number 2 and innovating new products. I think they would rather try
to get along with MS than to wage war with them.
As far as Jobs and Gates working together, I think Jobs is disgusted with
MS copying the look and feel of Mac OS again. I highly doubt that Jobs would
let Gates anywhere near anything Apple is working on.
I think Gates status with MS is just a formality and away to avoid any culpability.
I believe he is still fully in control. You know what they say, Once a
weasel always a weasel.
Chris I'm not trying to offend you, I realize you think highly of Gates,
I just don't.
