Hiya fellas! And gals!
Hey, the house I lived in for 12 years with the PARIS studio in it has
been sold, and I had to move out. Waaaa! BUT . . . the owner let me take
all the recording gear with me cuz he doesn't know how to use it anyway and
thinks it's too old. Yay! BUT . . . I don't really have a studio anymore,
at least not with the nice separate control room with the little window,
etc. I just have a big old finished basement with a strange little room
attached. The space is mostly carpeted, except for about the last 8 of the
32 foot length, which is linoleum. Low ceiling w/ ceiling tiles (8'? maybe
even 7')
I attached a crude diagram of the space that I drew in Photoshop in
hopes of getting some opinions on how best to set up the studio and what to
do with that little room. (Yeah, I know, I used the " inches symbol instead
of the ' foot symbol, but no, it's not a doll house. Just translate to feet
please.) Vocal/drum booth? Machine room? Hookah lounge? Do I need to
barter with some carpenter/songwriter to build me a wall for a separate
control room? Also, what about cheap sound-proofing? I have a bunch of
Auralex bass traps and a few panels, but not enough for the whole space.
Anyway, I need to get set up soon as I can, cuz we had to dismantle the
studio right in the middle of the rhythm tracks for the new Sarahtonin CD,
which is promising to be even better than the first, if that's possible. :)
Thanks in advance for your cogitations.
Humbly yours,
Sarahtonin
PS: Happy Halloween!

Couple of questions
1) what instruments will you be tracking?
1a) Do you record many at one time?
2) what kind of budget do you have?
3) are you allowed to move that existing wall?
4) how noisy is that furnace?

Good questions . . .

Drums w/ bass guitar going direct, sometimes w/ keys, also direct.
Everything else (guitars, vocals, flute, violin, bassoon, etc) recorded
individually.
>
> 2) what kind of budget do you have?
Budget? Uh . . . does that mean money? I work as an RN . . .
sometimes I have a couple hundred left out of a paycheck.
>
> 3) are you allowed to move that existing wall?
I haven't talked to the new landlords abt any major modifications,
but as long as they're not paying for it, they might not object.

It's an oil furnace, kind of a dull roar when the fan is going,
otherwise not quiet. Actually louder upstairs than down. Haven't measured
decibels. :)

Hi Sarah
What you could do is use that small room as a machine room and access hall
to the ctrl room. That center partition must be a supporting partition of 2'
x 6" for the floor above so you cant really mess with it to much but you
should be able to add a couple openings with headers for the 2 doors. Then
that furnace area needs attention for sure, dbl wall with insulation, RC
channel and 5/8" drywall rite from floor to floor above, sealed tight. I
attached a jpg of my ideas.
That is probably what I would do in your position Sarah.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Using Rob's JPG as a template I'd put my mixing area along the far short
wall of the small room...better acoustic properties and you could use the
walk around room as a bass trap.
As for sound treatment Owens Corning 703 wrapped in fabric and hung on the
walls and placed in the corners of both rooms...this will probably be your
single biggest expense but best bang for your buck in terms of treatment.

Don, did you find any OC703 out your way, I'm having a hell of a time
finding some out East. I am planning on going with that Rockwool stuff from
Roxul, according to Ethan, it is very similar.

Use Roxul RXL 40 batt insulation...essentially the same stuff.
you'll probably have to get it at a building supply store as the big box
stores don't carry it...at least in Ottawa

Don't know how it is elsewhere, but up here places like Home Depot give
you three free cuts on a piece of material (small fee per cut after
three). If you have your plans laid out nicely in advance you could
walk out of the store with a lot of your work done already - or at
least with the sheet reduced to more manageable dimensions.

I spent a hundred bucks bribing an acoustics guy I knew to come in and
give my place a once-over before I started building.
The best - *the best* - $100 I ever spent, bar none.

Thank you very much for the modified .jpg -- I like the looks of that. I

Thanks everybody for the input. I'll take before and after pictures if it
turns out I can do some major remodelling down here. :)
