Problem with PARIS Launching/Opening [message #107090] Sat, 23 June 2012 14:20 Go to next message

I suddenly started having problems with PARIS opening. It has worked fine for years, but now, all other programs on my computer opens except Paris. I deleted the paris.cgi file, then copied the paris.cgi backup file and saved it as paris.cgi and it worked. (I found this technique on the 3.0 CD ROM.) I shut down the computer and tried again the next morning and it stopped working again. I repeated the same procedure above and nothing. Anyone have any tips on how to get this problem resolved? I'm using version 3.0 on Windows XP. I have not changed anything outside of the basic system and so I'm using only 1 card and 1 MEC.

I've got nothing myself but while we wait for one of the other users to chime in, PARIS now has a Wiki of its own, give the bugs/troubleshooting section a shot while you wait just in case something jumps off the page at you - and welcome to the PARIS forums, glad you found us! Check out Mike Audet's developments, if you haven't been here yet then prepare for a few surprises Very Happy

Thanks! I did check out the trouble shooting section, but I didn't see anything yet. I tried the process that puts a text file in the Paris folder but it didn't work. I'm working on it more tonight.

Thanks for the response. I'm so glad we have a forum for Paris users. Great site!

Ray, I've got a couple of ideas.

I understand that PARIS worked before. I don't know if an automatic update screwed things up or not. I don't update my PARIS XP rigs past SP2. I have 2 new fresh XP installs and use an XP SP2 install disc which was mailed to me years ago because I was on dial up.

So with a fresh install of XP and SP2 I then install Paris at C:\PARIS_3. With no second hard drive I put the Paris audio folder at C:\PARIS_AUDIO and projects at C:\Paris projects. Everything right on the C:\ directory.

Some people have had better luck installing the Paris program right on the C:\ because Paris may not be so good with long file names. Remember it's older coding.

1st I create a folder at C:\Paris install. I place the 3 install components in here.

2nd I install the XP drivers and reboot. I check the system folder in the device manager to make sure the scherzo is there and when all goes well it has it's own IRQ.

3rd I install the Paris program to the C:\ prompt as above. And reboot.

4th I install the subsystem and reboot again.

Then before I launch PARIS I open the config in Textpad and change the config to 128, 8192, 128 and 256. I noticed that the install Paris config has very low numbers like 10,2048,128, 256 or something like that. I think I even had a problem on my new installs and changed the config in Textpad and it's worked superbly since. So, this might be your culprit.

I just did 2 new installs this way last week on a backup system and a garage system (video green screen recording mostly, see website below) and both are rock solid. My main rig in my home studio is pretty solid too. All XP machines. On the 2 new machines HyperTreading is disabled in the bios. My studio rig it's enable but I'm also using Mike Audet's drivers here.

I've tweaked every machine to be audio friendly. Turned off all windows enhancements, updating, indexing, hybernation, system restore, firewall, fast user switching, messenger disabled, etc. Disabled all com, lpt, ports not used, etc. Disabled almost all startup items and I don't run anti-virus. The only thing on is the clock in the lower right corner.

I hope some of this helps.

THANKS WAYNE!! I did try those steps and it worked!! I'm back in business! Thanks so much for the info!! I sure am glad I found this site.

By the way, I just posted a questions about installing a new MEC Expansion Module. Do you know how to install?

Thanks again for your suggestion.
