Hi all. I'm starting to compile lists of apps that support PAF.

These are the questions I'm asking:

1) Runs under which OS (Mac OS9, Mac OSX, PC, Linux?)
2) Does it just read or import PAF, or does it both read and write them?
3) Still available?

Next question is - what apps would you *like* to see PAF support in?

Reads/writes:
Reaper* (PC, Mac OSX)
Wavelab (PC)
BIAS PEAK (Mac OS9, Mac OSX)
Awave Studio (PC - XP or Vista)
BarbaBatch (Mac OS9, Mac OSX)
SoundConverter (Mac OSX, PC)
CoolEdit 1.2 (with PAF file filter) (PC)
Prosoniq SonicWorx (Mac OS9)

Reads only:
FairStars Audio Convertor (PC)
Factory Audio Convertor (PC)
Audio Ease Snapper (Mac OSX)
Harrison Mixbus** (Mac OSX)
Ardour** (Linux, Mac OSX)
SoundApp (Mac OS9)
AudioMove** (OSX, WinXP onwards)

*via libsndfile
*via libsndfile; 24-bit PAF from Mac PARIS not yet supported

Writes only:
Live CD Ripper (PC)
Audio Music Batch Converter (PC)

Like to see:
I'd like to see read/write PAF support in Melodyne myself.
Ableton Live

[edited to add: for me, the second two categories will be a priority - seeing them complete their support for PAF so they read *and* write PAF (where appropriate, ie a dedicated CD ripper doesn't need PAF import). After that, next priority is the fourth category, "apps we'd like to see PAF supported in"; obviously the focus is on speeding workflow between PARIS and apps that add new functionality- K]

PS: - we may never see the last category implemented, but it won't be because I didn't ask them for it Very Happy

Ableton Live wouldn't suck either.

And a bump to the top. Anyone know of apps I've missed in there?

Anyone know of Linux apps that support PAF (presumably via libsndfile)?

Don't forget good old Cool Edit V1.2 with the PAF filter, I still use that on occasion.

I would also like to see Melodyne. Lots of potential in this app.

Before I go bang on the doors of developers like these, we need to get libsndfile bugfixed so that all flavours of PAF are read and translated correctly. It currently produces gibberish with 24-bit PAFs produced by the Mac version of PARIS.

That's high on my personal list of "things I'd like to see solved": we'd then have an existing translation library to point developers to when asking for the inclusion of PAF import/export. I'm not going to waste my time dreaming about the impossible, we're far too small and closed a market to ask people to devote any significant development resources to. But the moment we can say "look over here, all of the heavy lifting has already been done" it could be a far more reasonable proposition (possibly just a few hours of coding time; Xenakios built the PAF import wrapper in a matter of hours). A couple of dozen potential licenses looks like better math at that point.

Harrison MIXBUS!
Yesterday I imported some old paf. files into Mixbus, they worked just fine and the sound was amazing!
I think there´s some "PARIS MAGIC" in Mixbus.
If you´re a MAC/PARIS head, you should try it.
Introductory price is only $79.99.

Yes Aaro - I have found the same thing. I've decided it's not _quite_ as 3D as Paris
(most noticeable on headphones) but I'm also using a convo verb instead of my dedicated TC hardware unit, which I believe does not give Mixbus the same chance...

Kerry,
The first two revs of Adobe Audition manage 16 & 24 bit pafs. I fly project tracks to the adobe computer, process and return to the original project time aligned.

For mac users: SoundApp plays paf files- not sure if it converts...
now SoundApp Reborn is available for OS X

Prosoniq's SonicWorx converts and is still available

OK, thanks, got 'em now. I forgot about both of those. SoundApp Reborn sounds pretty cool, even if it hasn't hit the point of usefulness yet - hope he keeps at it.

Hmm I just tried some Har-bal generated .pafs and all I got was noise...

A Google around seems to indicate Har-Bal uses libsndfile for paf support. But paf support is incomplete in libsndfile, there are problems with 24-bit Mac PARIS files. Sounds like the same symptoms. It's on our radar screen, I really want to see that fixed.

As of yesterday, Reaper now fully supports .paf read/write (see sticky)!
