Control Panel, then Device Manager, then IDE ATA/ATAPI
Controllers, then select whichever IDE channel (primary or
secondary) you want to check... then right-click and
select "Properties", then click on the "Advanced Settings" tab
in the mini-window that pops up, then make sure your "Device
type" is set for Auto-Detection (instead of "None"), then look
right below that in the Transfer Mode menu for an option that
says "DMA, if available".
Then take two aspirin, and a shot of Vodka, and call me before
10:30p Mountain Time this evening if you still need some
help... 915-585-3806.
NeilDon, as much classical recording as you do, I'm surprised you're
recommending the Summitt stuff... it's some of the dirtier tube
gear out there, IMO. Don't get me wrong, I've used a few of
their pieces & like them a lot for certain things, but it's far
from serious Class-A tube electronics.
Explain yourself, sir! lol

I found the problem. This drive is master on IDE channel two. I located the
menu to check it in Device Manager under IDE/ATAPI controllers>right
click>advanced. this drive is running in PIO mode. that would screw the
pooch for an audio drive, dont'cha think? When I doubleclick on the IDE2
controller icon to open it up in the device manager, Device manager hangs
and the whole system is starting to lose it's former feeling of stability.
I'm pretty sure I've got a faulty device.

Windows will disable DMA mode if it receives certain errors and more than 6
x DMA timeouts occur. You can sometimes turn it back on by
uninstalling/reinstalling the device. No luck here. I've tried repeatedly.
It's stuck on PIO. I checked Seagate's site and there's no driver that I'm
missing. The Barracuda uses a default Windows driver.
Luckily I've got another kickass 250G WD with 8MB cache drive here that I
know is good and this will cover my needs for a while.
I'm going to send this Barracuda back to OWC for a replacement. Funny. I've
got a 10 year old Barracuda SCSI drive running in one of my *non critical*
workstations. I've always trusted Seagate. This is the last thing I would
have expected. Now once I get the new WD drive loaded, if it shows only PIO
mode too, then that likely a mobo glitch and *will* be cause for additional
wailing, gnashing of teeth......etc..
Appreciate your feedback man. It's sure good to have you back around here.

>Looks like it's a mainboard issue after all. IDE 2 master is showing PIO
mode with the new drive as well. I know for sure this is a good drive. IDE2
slave is showing up as DMA so there you go. What a friggin PITA. These
boards are pretty rare commodoties. Bummer. Since it's a master drive, I'll
bet that screws up my ability to hang a CDR on it and have much in the way
of throughput to the IDE2 slave, which would need to be either the audio
drive or the dedicated drive for streaming samples. I wonder though. Guess
it's worth a try until I can sort this out.

These things are pretty cheap if you can find one. I may try to get my hands
on another one, just in case. I love it's compatibility with the RME cards,
UAD-1 cards and dual core CPU,

just for the record, I've had OS X crash. Think it was some piece of crap
multimedia thing I was trying to download and play. Don't remember exactly.
Had to pull the plug on the machine, just like in OS 9. But it only happened
once.

I could argue, if I were feeling more masochistic... I always felt an heir
was only one inherited fortune away from the "loser unemployed" you mention.
It's not something that makes me comfortable.
Health care providers, on the other hand, astound me. One of the nurses we
had at the end said she'd taken care of her folks for years and loved it
so much she's done it professionally for many more years. That is beyond
my comprehension.

It was very enlightening. In the tiny time I had there, the folks in the
street seemed even more remote than those in California, and that's saying
something. I always found California to be the unfriendliest place I'd ever
been, and I've lived here all my life.
I sat by two native Bostonians on the flights, one guy and one girl, and
each had moved to SF and loved it and planned to stay. Both were the only
ones in their families who had moved away. Both were young college graduates.
Both missed the cold winters. One planned to stay in SF, but the other wanted
to move on and explore the rest of the west coast.
I really didn't have enough interaction to be able to judge the town for
myself very well. Only scratched the Bostonian surface.
The Freedom Walk, of which we got to about half, was quite interesting. I
kept thinking of how these folk were just folk, like we're folk, only involved
in things quite unprecedented and every bit as important to the world as
some of them imagined, only perhaps not in the ways they anticipated. I seriously
doubt that anyone I know, or even know of, would have attempted the things
they did, or would have been capable of doing them.
Their roads and signage, on the other hand, sucked big time. It was as if
they didn't really want anyone not local to be able to find their way around.
I was a nervous wreck after a day of driving through the city.
But then, I'm a wimp, I've heard. Ha! j/k, Justin!
That bridge like two inverted Ys is as cool as anything I've seen outside
the Golden Gate.
And seeing large hunks of the Charles River frozen over was like nothing
I'd ever seen in my sheltered life. Of course, cutting a Chrismas tree in
the snow was novel, too...

back them up after every session.

DOnI have a female vocal that has huge dynamic range. She starts out like
a ballad and then is belting it out like whitney. I tried a variety of
compressors but none seem able to tame this. Limiters seem to work the
best so far. I'm going to try a combo of the two but just wondered what
you guys would do for plugins. I tried C1 Comp, RenVox, Timeworks
Mastering Compressor, Ultrafunk compressor (worked better), Bluetubes,
Voxengo, but the Bluetubes limiter seemed to do the best job so far.
Where would you be going on this. Is there a stereo NoLimit? I forget.
If so, is that a possibility? What plugin can jam this into the pocket.

know anything about your mobo or what kind of controllers it uses. I'm using
the Promise controller on my ASUS A7V8X-LAN mobo which is very stable for
use with Paris. The Promise SATA controller on this board doesn't really
benchmark much faster than an ATA 133 controller, but it does give me
something extra and later generation controllers seem to report much better
throughput times. My A7V8x mobo is an old design, but it is the most stable
mobo for Paris that I have ever used with Matrox G450 PCI and IDE cards. The
VIA KT7 chipset is very friendly with these old Matrox cards.

se to make it fit. After you've done that,
you can use a compressor to smooth out what's left.
It sounds like automation time to me.
Good luck!

John,
Besides automation I like to put two La2as in series. A Waves ren/C1 =
will

the other to
smooth what's left in comp mode. Dial in small amounts so neither gets =

Then apply automation to what's still out of control.

John,
Another option would be to cut the performance into separate chunks, =
spread them over a few tracks, then adjust the volume

First, I ask the artist to lay down a dummy vocal so we can see vs./ch. or
whatever.
Then we cut whispery stuff with a high gain and shouting vocals with a lower
gain.
Result - far less need for compression of any kind.
I work with some classically trained vocalists who can sing in any part of
their range without gain problems.
Then there are folks who need some help:the knob, the comp, or alcohol!
Best,
Lance - Budding old fart.

Last time I was there I arrived on New Years Eve 1994. We partied until =
early AM and were lying naked as a bunch of jaybirds on the beach the =
next morning when the helicopter gunships flew over on their way to put =
down the Zapatista uprising.
Fun place actually.........

It's very prevalent in this area. We've had our horses vaccinated, =
but there is no vaccination for humans. People have died around here =
from this. I know a couple of folks who caught it a couple of years ago =
and are still sick. Having lived a good part of my life in the tropics =
and having survived some pretty nasty bugs, I've got a pretty strong =
constitution/immune system. Summer of 2003 I got really sick for a few =
days. Never felt anything like it before, but then it cleared up. No =
self respecting bug hangs around me for long, but I worry a lot about my =
wife.

I hope you're wrong.

I've been puttering around inthe yard today doing this and that. =
There are
dead birds all over the place. It's not from cold. These birds =
are
year -round species and it hasn't been cold enough to hurt these =
little
critters. This looks like a classic West Nile die =
off.......either that or
our little cat has been working triple overtime (she's a major =
predator, but
this is too much, even for her). Strange that it should happen =
at this time
of year though. It's too cold for mosquitoes. I wonder if the =
infection can
lie dormant and then pop up later. We've called the health =
department.
