I'm slowly integrating the new Macbook Pro into the workflow (thanks
Chris!). Logic 8 runs great on it. 4GB RAM, 512 graphics RAM, 250GB HD,
2 firewire and three USB2 ports, expansion port, HiDef LED-lit display
and OSX 10.5.
Right now I'm using it to animate and edit a 20 minute video project
using a variety of 2D and 2D software and FCP. Haven't done any head to
head tests against the dual G5 yet but it feels a bit faster, and on a
quick, non-scientific 3D rendering test it was about 10-15% faster,
although the G5 was also running more other stuff at the time.
As far as OSX 10.5, pretty cool so far. I'm glad Apple finally got
around to supporting multiple desktops, I've been missing that since BeOS...
So my preliminary conclusions are that the MBP is a nice laptop, and the
G5 still does pretty well for an old timer. Nice to have a couple of
boxes to divide the work.
Next week I'll tackle installing all the Native Instruments stuff onto
the MBP.
Cheers,
-Jamie

Vary cool to hear Jamie. And you have the option to add up to a 30" monitor
if you want to expand your desk top. My next Mac may not be a Mac. Apple
needs a sub $1,000.00 tower.

If you're still serious about building an XP box for Paris, I'm still
onboard to help you configure it up, if you run into any snags.

Don't know how serious I might be - money's tight! - but I'd be curious to
know what'd be involved.

Cool Aaron, thanks! It's going to be a while. I have a P4 2.4 GHz Prescott
machine I've used with older design software and ULead video studio. The
2.4GHz is a MSI 648F Neo MS-6585 MOBO. This would be the Paris machine.
I'm also thinking about building a dual boot Hackintosh 6600 machine. At
the Moment I have many other priorities, including financial.
Aaron, I'm curious about what you and Jamie are using for your video production
rigs. What cameras, lighting etc. I've done wedding videos in the past
with mini DV cameras and I'm thinking about getting back in for supplemental
income. If you guys have time shoot me an email.

Aaron, what are your thoughts on opening Mac Paris projects/files in a Paris

HI James,
They really need to have a single socket board that will take a quad
core. There is such a huge gap in choices. For most people the 8 cores
are just total over kill.
I'd like to see them do a small mid tower and give the IMac some balls.
All it is a laptop in a bigger monitor. They should at least put a
fricking express slot on it.
They could easily put a desktop based chipset in it instead and use
desktop quad cores instead of laptop cpu. Single socket Quad cores
especially the new 9450 Penyrn based CPUs are awesome.
They have more way more horse power than the Dual Xeons did. I think
they could get a powerful desktop setup in the $1500 to $1800 that would
rival the high end PC gamer, audio and video systems.
I really don't think they can ever deliver a sub $1000 machine that will
compete with PCs in the same price and still keep their level of
component quality that they seem to want to care about.
Do you really want them to become a Gateway, Dell, Compaq, etc?
If they really wanted to push the envelope and take on MS for real they
need to make OSX officially work on any PC and let manufacturers like
HP, DELL, etc offer it on their machines. That is the only way for it
to get in the sub $1000 world.

Chris, I'm glad you recognize Apples quality when it comes to components.
In the PC world, when you look at a SOYO MOBO and an Intel MOBO there is
a definite difference in price, and I assume quality. Apple as I know it,
is using Intel MOBOs in their lap tops and I guess desk tops??? With all
the stuff Apple is having built in the FoxConn Plant in China, and all of
the defective iPods out of the box I hear about, I have to think Apple's
quality is not quite what it once was. I believe Apple still has reasonably
good quality, however. I for one, think their prices should reflect their
savings, but that is a whole other subject.
Yes, I would like Apple to keep their quality up. Chris, you starting to
sound like a Apple salesman: ) Have you been drinking the Kool-Aid? :
) I hope you know I'm just kidding you. I'm glad your on board with the
Mac thing.
There is a company called Psystar that was advertising a core 2 duo Machine
that will run Mac OSX for $399.00 and $550.00.
Here is a picture of the Mac clone, it comes in white and black.

I'm not in the event/wedding market, although I've shot a couple of
weddings for friends but not recently.
For our wedding a few years back we passed a Panasonic DVX100 around (we
have talented friends) and we had a wireless mic to pick up the
important words up front and to catch the sound of the small orchestra
and the air canons (yes, it was an unusual wedding). It was outdoors so
lighting was by the sun.
Anyway, there are a lot of options for event video gear. Start with
Canon, Sony, Panasonic in DV or HDV. Any of the models with XLR audio
inputs are worth considering, (and maybe a few that don't, for B-roll).
Or go tapeless with the latest formats from Sony and Panasonic, or via a
hard drive recorder. At events, you won't get much chance to do
controlled lighting so choose a camera with good low light performance.
I would think a hi-def format would give you a marketing edge. Use a
tripod when you can. Wireless mics on or near the participants would be
a good thing. Great pictures aren't enough if you can't hear what's
going on.
I've used a lot of editing systems. Currently I edit with Final Cut Pro
on the G5 or the new laptop.
Feel free to email if I can help with any questions.
Cheers,
-Jamie

Hi Jamie! First, I feel like I hi-jacked your thread, sorry. It's great
that you got a new MBP! Keep us posted.
Thanks for your reply. I guess I should have qualified myself a bit more.
I've done a bit more than just wedding videos. I went to school for film
production at the Center for Creative studies. I also studied film and video
production at UCLA and UC Irvine. I was also a NAB member in the past.
I've done film and video production in the past, but I've been out of it
for a while. I'm hip to most of the prosumer cameras etc., but I wanted
to get your opinions on what you like and so on. The big question is which
HD format to go with and why?
I will be using FCP Studio 2 on a Mac, and ULead Studio or maybe Vegas 6
on a PC.

Sounds like you're in good shape with your experience and education.
What to buy depends on the results you want and how much you want to spend.
The tech changes constantly, much like computers. If you want the
security of shooting tape and your budget is under $10k, for SD I still
like the Panasonic DVX100. For HD/SD, the Canon HDV XHA1. Both can do 24
frame progressive - something I use but event shoots probably wouldn't
require that.
For tapeless, the new EX1 is a big step forward for Sony but with a
couple of out-of-the-gate problems. Rolling shutter issues could cause
problems for fast action or concerts, there were also some vignetting
problems, but otherwise it's impressive for the $. Panasonic has the P2
cams, I thought the HVX200 was too noisy in low light but there's an
update announced.
Google around for the current NAB news. New stuff is coming from
everyone. Panasonic looks interesting again with several tapeless format
options. Red is promising something beyond HD to compete with the above
in a year or so.
Replying from the new laptop. ;^)

I'm still in the throes of specing that out for my work environment, so it's
going to be a while... gummint moves slow. For my personal stuff I intake DV
video via firewire into my new machine, an Intel Quad 6600 system. I'm still
using an old version of Vegas then that gets blown to DVD-R. I don't really
do production professional video anymore, so I'm sure I'm behind the curve.
That said, Vegas is very easy and very powerful for the home/semi-pro user
and won't cost and arm and a leg like an Avid or Grass Valley type setup.

I've got a few things to add to Jamie's good info, interlaced below.

Lighting is ultra important, some things just can't be fixed properly after
the fact.

All good advice, and those are the names I'd be looking at. Depending on
where you want to go, I've seen a few prosumer HD camcorders hitting the
market the last few months with some pretty good 1/3" CCD specs at 1080i.
The current craze is to get Carl Zeiss lenses. I have one of those on my
Canon still EOS and it's fantastic, so one might assume the motion lenses
are of the same quality.

Definitely unless you're going very budget and buying someone else's
leftover SD gear BUY HD for your initial investments.

I hear good things also about Premier, but I just couldn't stand the
interface/GUI. _SO_ not intuitive. For basic home edits something like Ulead
would be economical, but I still have to recommend on the PC platform to go
Vegas.

I've done it for others. The only snag I've seen is converting the file
types if you used native Mac file writes, and I think that was protools
specific though I could certainly be wrong on that from memory. For those
file transfers, MacOpener seems to work well for other folks.. no Mac's in
my studio, so I'm limited on that knowledge. I believe Brian T posted in the
past a full 'how to' in the newsgroup if you can search for it or someone
archived it (thinking John B or Steve Artguy here) to the web.
Tell you what, send me a PPJ and the file types on a DVD and I'll see if I
can't just open 'em up here on the PC. You still got my address?

Thanks guys for the responses! The reason I asked the question about the
Mac to PC Paris file is, I'm thinking about recording with a Paris Mac and
Mixing with a Paris PC, plus I have a lot on archived Mac Paris files. I'm
planning on moving a external hard drive with the files between the two systems.
I guess I just need to do it when I have time.

Maybe you know this already - but when I was running PARIS on my G3 I found
this extension an essential piece of kit for seamless Mac/PC PARIS session
compatibility -

Solved a couple of thorny filename issues for me back in the day. If you
have any concerns about stability etc, enable it in your extensions while
you do transfers and I reckon you can turn it off after.

Doh, just found out it's for CDs only, not hard disks. Sorry!

Apple uses Quanta for building the Mac Book Pros (same as we use). They use Intel and Foxconn for Mac Pros.
Currently Foxconn I believe make the mobo for the Mac Pro.
Intel might have helped them with the design but they could not have produced it cheap enough.
Some of the newer higher end HP Quad Xeon systems are using a mobo custom built for them by Foxconn.
Foxconn is one of if not the biggest customer OEM manufacturers.
I believe Apple still has reasonably

On the MAC pros I think their pricing is on the mark for the type of hardware they are using.
The laptops and IMACs should be lower in price. About the only custom about the laptops and the shells.
The guts are already in normal PC laptops.
The only thing that sends Mac Pros sky rocketing in price of a similar spec PC Xeon is when it comes to drive storage.
Having only 4 drives total sucks. in many PC towers of a similar size and build quality you can 8 or more in some cases.
The external SATA drive racks are huge prices jumps.

I have never not been on board with Apple. I did give up on them in th whole G5 days. They were way under powered for the price imho.
Had way too many noise and heat and power issues for something that is supposed to be so customized.
They were pretty doomed I think till they got the Intel thing happening.
We have been selling Apple systems for about a year now. jeez go to our website some time. :)
Got way better prices than Apple and will pre-install any audio/video hardware software people buy for it at no charge.
We also have lifetime phone/email tech support for the Apple just like any of our systems.
