And who made you the rater-of-discussions anyway? I do think
you took a bit of a cheap shot there considering the effort we
made to get along. I guess we are all learning to live with each
other's idiotsyncracies. (is that a word?)
So, what are you doing on the shoot? Camera op? production
mixer? featured artist? sword swallower? tattoo man?
expiring minds want to know...

headedness on the part of other people.
Hearing a perspective for what it actually is and not assuming what it
might mean. Sharing views, insight and information as a two way street.
Leaving mental ruts behind. Taking away new knowledge. Good stuff when
it happens. Takes exceptional concentration, sometimes. Can't say I
always succeed.
I'm shooting interviews and concert footage tomorrow. Should be a blast.
Cheers,

Yep. I'm aware of that. If I need to I will reinstall at least the simpler
of the two boots if I can't get a stable Paris system this week. My first
priority was just to boot to something/anything quickly to make sure that
all the hardware was plugged in right. In fact I'm also a bit keen to test
whether this same install, which was unstable on my last system, can be made
to run nicely with the new board. It's kind of part of my fault finding.
Of course a re-install may fix it in any case, but I'm just interested to
see if the new mobo on it's own will clear it up.
>just messin though, I've done the same thing
Yeh, I know it's dodgy. I just wanted to get it running. Next months pay
will problably buy new OS drives for it anyhow.

that out
congrats on the new puter mang
I literally kicked the shit out of my computer hoping it would break so I
could replace it,, but nope... still tickin.

I just had to make a "panic installment" of Paris on my LOGIC AUDIO computer
since the motherboard seems to be faulty on my Paris computer. Everything
installed as it should and the default ppj opens correctly. The problem is
that I can't open a project from there. I loose contact with the program
and eventually the computer "blacks out". Do any of you recognize this problem
? P4 2,66 2Gb RAM, Matrox 450(I had the same in my Paris computer and I
didn't have any problem), 3 EDS, 2 MEC, M-audio 1010LT,
Thanks in advance !
PeterI'll prolly build myself a 64 bit box as soon as the whole 64 bit thing is
sorted out with all of my various DAw components. I'm just looking for
10-15% headroom right now, just iin case I need it. Never hurts to have it
handy, though this DAW seems to be quite happy running 4 x 21' CRT's with a
pair of them being driven by a Matrox G450 PCI card, a couple of RME HDSP
9652's and 3 x UAD-1's. I'm so happy with the way this has finally come
together that I might not screw it up for a while.

I know how you feel. I've spent the last few months on my half dead 1.2Gig
box, and it's been getting so bad I've been loading one boot, then the other,
desperately trying to get something stable. During the last project I was
doing I couldn't switch between projects in the end because it crashed 2
of 3 times. I had to shut Paris down and load it back up again every time
I wanted to switch songs.
Gets mighty frustrating.

ok, so lets stick be the numbers: by the numbers, rabin
is by far the best "terror-reducer" there ever was down there.
thus, until proven otherwise, i take the freedom to assume
his way was the better one. quite easy. i dont see any reason
to somehow become a "believer" into other methods. not when
theyre so quite obviously not working yet.

that wasnt meant as a cliche, and from my understanding of
your language a loooong way from dumb brabbling like
"israel is making the cowboy". youre really projecting something
here. but if muscle flexing (which at least in my language
is just another term for "impress with strenght", which
is what it is) sounds like "cowboy" to you, its not what i meant.

sides down there. yet, if i try very hard to get into
the dumbass religious "OMG its our holy cities" dogma,
i can at least see hwere theyre coming from, and of course
i can see that for both sides. here we have two radical
partys, both believing the land to be theirs, both believing
the land to be sacred, so they kill each other over it with
whatever means possible. the one has planes, so they use
planes. the other doesnt have planes, but suidicide bombers,
so they use suicide bombers.
theyre all idiots. but i dont feel inclines to take sides.
i dont take any side - that you take the israel side is
quite obvious. that you imply i wuold be taking
the palaestinian side only because i dont take the israel
side is also obvious, and a nice example.
hear me: i dont take *anyones* side down there. i take
the side of anyone who says "lets stop the violence and try
to talk about it - and even if it doesnt lead anywhere,
maybe we will have a little less casualties during
the talks". thats the approach that gets my vote. cause
thats the only approach that ever changed *anything* down

Better put your helmet on, though. When Don gets wind of this, he might want

all this 'pollitical bullshit' behind him (now that he's er climaxed, as
it were) and get back to that 'hard rock tune' of his that he's been tracking.
So yeh. So give er, if it happens. Spare no expense LOL. I'm lappin it up.

>HI Kim,
Glad to see you got that board. It should work out great for you.
With the Gig of ram I assume that is 2 sticks of 512 right because you
want the far better memory performance of dual channel?
You really should do a fresh install. This board is very very very
different than your old one. If you have a broadband connection the
reinstall of windows should take at most 45min to 1hr. Paris takes about
10 min to install and configure with a 2 card setup. 3 or more can take
longer mainly in trying to fiddle around with the right PCI slot combo.
As with all motherboards you can not compleatly control PCI steering. If
a PCI slot shares with multiple on board devices which most do most if
not all of the on board devices will follow the PCI IRE setting. You
will find on the newer mother boards handle IRQ sharing far better than
before. This board especially so. PCI slot 2 and 3 are the best ones to
start with when adding cards. I wouldnt bother with the SPDIF connector
just plug in the USB/Firewire header. On most newer cases you will get
and extra PCI slot space above the AGP slot. If not then put the header
on the very bottom one sense this is the least likely to be used. I
would leave your NIC ports enabled till your all done installing windows
and updated everything. The NVidia one would be the best one to leave
enabled sense it is integrated into the chipset. I would also use
something other than the on board sound if you are using audio software
other than Paris. I'd suggest the MAudio AudioPhile 2496 or 192 models
or use the M-Audio FW Audiophile. Otherwise RME stuff.
Here is a quick guide to how I would install things on XP in general.
Makes sure there are no PCI cards in the machine when doing a fresh
install of windows. Only the AGP video card.
Install windows sp2.
install marvell nic driver only! from driver cd. Don't install the other
drivers sense you will be updating them later.
Download newest @BIOS flash utility and newest BIOS for bios for MB and
flash BIOS.
http://asia.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/FileList/Driver/driver _gbttools_gbt_@bios.exe
http://america.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/FileList/BIOS/bios_ k8nsu939_f6.exe
Install ALL windows xp sp2 updates (use custom update not express).
Install them all don't ask any questions just install them dammit.
Install Newest N-Vidia motherboard chipsets drivers.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_5.10
Install newest video card drivers.
Install Windows SP2 FW800 patch.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222/en-us
Install any audio and Midi devices.
Install your main recording software
Install any DSP PCI cards, i.e., UAD, TC POwercore.

--------------040703020807050405090502--hey DJ,
what is your latency set at during this project?
is that 60-75% vst performance or actual system performance... via windows
task manager?
it sounds like your pci bus is working pretty hard... i just have 2 uad's
and the rme running on mine right now.
i would say that amount of cpu usage would be right if you buffer/latency
was set at 256 or maybe 512 and/or you were using some native plug-ins. but
then again i don't know how much of a strain all your pci stuff might be
causing the cpu.
i have the xp2800 on an asus a7n8x-e with 2 gig of pc3200.
i am playing tracks from a 7200 8meg cache 80 gig WD drive.... (no sata).
on average... i will have 48 tracks or more playing.... 50-90% uad-1
usage.... a couple convo reverbs... and 12-20 other native plug-ins going.
my buffer is set at 1048. that usually takes me to between 50 and 70%....
75% tops.... monitoring with the vst performance meter in SX.
thought that might help give you some kinda reference.
i am gettin ready to do a mix with a gob of tracks..... like 70 or something
ridiculous.... mostly because 16 of the tracks are from the london symphony
orchestra! boing! :-)
well see how she holds up!

I believe that would be our old friend Brian Tankersley...what if i follow the wrong trail by mistake and end up lawyers office
of the guy (whose other parts i followed by your advice) he's suing.
he'll listen to my besotted tale of woe and offers me a job as a
numbers runner for one of his other clients. then after a few
successful runs i collect my money only to find out that it's
counterfeit. this of course happens after i go in to pay the parking
ticket i got in my rented car since mine is the real trail i should
have followed.
now i'm in court facing 3 to 5 for passing bad bills. the lawyer who

Still using mine, and added another for my live band's usage.. zero
problems. Paris is a 1900+ and the other a 2200+. My only regret is that I
could never find the firewire capable model in stock anywhere.

i am no computer expert and i may just be plain off.... but for what you are
doing.... that cpu usage sounds kinda high to me.... especially if your
buffer setting is at 8192!!
you are syncing PARIS and SX together right? i wonder if that puts a
noticeable strain on the system.
being that its working like you want... if it were me i wouldn't worrying
about trying to get the cpu performance any better. you know how puters
are... sometimes you can make things worse by over tweaking.
picking up a 3200 might give you that extra 5-10% you are looking for....
but you won't know till you pop it in. i'd just go make music and plan on
going to the athlon 64 at some point in the not to distant future.
that's my $.02.

I think this is very possible, though it wouldn't seem so. when sharing a
common clock source, there are some major interactions between the CPU usage
meters on both machines........do something on one machine, watch the CPU
meter change on the other.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Neil,
Sounds like you have a good handle on the issues.
I agree with everything you pointed out. I'm am very
interested in how Ozone performs for you. Keep
us updated!

OK, so I've been trying to finish up my 2nd CD, and there are
a couple of songs that are in various stages of completion, but
in the meanwhile I've been working on some mixes for the ones
that are finished - you guys have heard some of this stuff, I
posted links to a few tunes awhile back. Anyway I thought I'd
try mastering this stuff myself - not because I think I can do
a better job of it than a regular mastering engineer, but
mainly just because I wanted to see if I could make it turn out
the way I wanted it, and also be able to take the time to tweak
as much as I liked - so to that end, some of you may recall
that I picked up the Izotope Ozone app awhile back. Some
observations on trying to master something that one has
recorded oneself:
*You've got no objectivity - even if you leave the song alone &
don't listen to it for awhile before attmepting a mastering
session, when you come back to it, you invariably are
influenced by what you've already done in the mix. One one
hand, this could be a good thing, becasue you more than anyone
else know where you want to go with the song, but it's also a
bad thing because in my case, I seem to want to enhance what
I've got, rather than making any subtle changes that could
present a different, perhaps better, picture.
*Expanded soundstages - There are a number of apps that can/will
widen the stereo field... back in the late early 90's I did
quite a number of mixes using the Bedini Audio Spatial
Environment, and wehn I planned on using it I ALWAYS mixed with
it inserted & "on". This was the only way I could mix & ensure
that I knew what I was getting - boy, was it easy to "find the
pocket" for just about any element in the mix using that box.
Ozone has a stereo spread section, and it's very cool because
it's multi-band, but the problem is, Ozone is pretty CPU-
intensive, so if you've got a mix going with a good number of
tracks & plugins running, you can't mix with Ozone inserted
unless your 'puter is a raging fast one. When you use one of
these stereo spread EFX in the mastering process, it affects
the mix itself; it changes everything... your reverbs sound
like you've boosted the level on them, you've got to watch your
vocals, because they can drop, anything you have in stereo gets
louder (and yes, I'm talking about even using it in very subtle
settings!). Part of the objectivity problem is that since you
mixed it, you probably percieve these changes as being more
obvious than someone who didn't mix it... so is the change good
or bad? Does it bother you because it's an obvious change to
you, or is it really OK, and actually sounds better that way?
It's hard to tell.
You've got no real solid frame of reference - Although I'm using
a different set of speakers to try the mastering process than
the ones I mixed on (again striving for some objectivity here),
it's still in the same room, which means you're still hearing
any effect the room may have on your mix in the same manner as
when you were mixing it.
Anyway... gotta go for now - maybe I'll post more on this
later; I've got some musings about compression too. lol

------=_NextPart_000_0009_01C58C3C.F8D59340--The mixes of mine that I've had success with are projects that I did in the
other incarnations of my studio on different monitors and in different
rooms. When I'm *mastering* mixes of projects I'm doing here, it involves
little more than matching levels and trimming up the beginnings and
ends............and *maybe* a touch *loud* if the client wants it (which is
seldom the case with the genre I'm normally involved in here)..........so
why would I want to come back and change the equalization/balance that I
worked so hard to achieve in a mix? Much better to have another set of
experienced ears to make these judgment calls. I'm not likely to want to
second guess myself on an entire project.

>Hey guys, just getting back into town from a another stint with Will Downing.
This past weekend we were in California for the Pasadena Jazz festival. It
was a really cool hit as well as a great opportunity to spend some time with
other colleagues that I've worked with as well as those that I enjoy listening
to.
We were brought on by comedian Sinbad...he's still got it! I also saw Jonathan
Butler, Brian Culbertson, Richard Elliot, Rick Braun and even Evelyn "Champaign"
King.
We followed that up with a night in Las Vegas (116 degrees) at the Las Vegas
Hilton with R&B crooner Kem. Although I'm not a gambler, I walked away with
some additional funding from a "one arm bandit", so suffice it to say, I
had a great trip.
TyroneBeen there too. I also have Ozone (and others) and agree with your Expanded
soundstages findings - it changes every thing somewhat; and yea it really
eats CPU. Can you describe the Bedini Audio Spatial box more?
