OK, I'll try to make this short and simple . . .

I've been syncing Cubase (5) to PARIS (2.xx) with great success for years now. But now if I open up a new PARIS project (new.ppj), Cubase loses sync, and does so at the same times, no matter which song file (.all) is open.

With a low dropout setting, you can actually see the Cubase "stop" button flash for a bit at about 10 seconds, and again at about 34 seconds. Same spots each pass.

The pattern goes like this: I start PARIS from zero, Cubase locks up pretty well til that hiccup at about 10 seconds, then it's a fraction of a second behind. It suddenly locks back up pretty well just after 20 seconds, but you can hear it slowly drifting back a hair. Then it locks up perfectly at about thirty seconds, and loses it badly again at about 34 seconds.

It doesn't matter which Cubase song is open, but if I open a PARIS project that has previously sync'd fine to Cubase, it continues to sync just fine, even if I change the Cubase song.

This tells me, I think, that there's something wrong with my new.ppj file?

I'm open to suggestions . . .

Thanks,
Sarah

PS: I tried PARIS v3, but I couldn't make Cubase respond at all to it.

MIDI sync, ADAT or time code? and I assume Paris is Master?

Hmmm... I'm undoubtedly telling you stuff you know already, but the "new" menu entry creates a new file from scratch *unless* you have a PPJ in the app folder named "Default Project.PPJ", in which case it creates it from that. So - do you use a Default Project.PPJ, and could it simply be corrupted? If you use one, quit PARIS, remove the Default Project.PPJ, reboot PARIS and then hit "new". Your settings will be gone, so recreate them and check if the problem persists.

If it does persist, as a short-term workaround you might try to making a copy of one of your known Cubase-friendly PPJs and using it as the basis of a new Default Project. Call the copy Default Project.PPJ, and save it somewhere besides your PARIS folder (say on your desktop). Clear (not delete!) all the audio out of it, clear all the automation, zero the mixer and re-save the song. Then swap it for the one in your PARIS folder and check it.

[It would actually sound like a conflict between "drop" set in one and "non-drop" set in the other, if only the hiccups were at the "one minute" mark. I got bitten by that in a Big Name Studio once. The assistant told me he was sending me drop frame, but it wasn't, which led to some not-very amusing interactions between the click and the rhythm section, and always in the same spot at 01:01:00:00 Very Happy]

Jeff - using MIDI time code, yes, PARIS is master

Kerry - Some good suggestions. I had thought of clearing out a working project file as you suggested and saving that as my new.ppj. It just seems weird to me that the MTC is generated from the project file. I guess I assumed that would be a hardware thing.

Anyway, I'll mess with it some more tonight.

Thanks.

The bizarreness increases . . .

Clearing out a working project and saving that as my "Default Project.ppj" Did the trick. But here's what seems really crazy:

1. If I add the audio file "Click Sound.wav" to my Default Project, the sync weirdness previously described returns.

2. I sometimes use that click sound to make a click track, but the file doesn't even have to be on the playing field -- it's presence in the audio bin is enough to cause the problem.

3. Clearing the the click file from the audio bin doesn't not fix the sync problem, even if it has never been played. It's as though once it's been there, the damage is done.

4. If I add any file to the Default Song from the sync-challenged song, such as a guitar or bass take, that will also cause the hiccups at 10 and 34 seconds and the other weirdness.

So I have pretty much fixed the problem by creating the new Default Project, but I'm baffled as to how on earth the sync can go bonkers just from the mere presence of that click file, or any audio file that shared a song with it.

I'm no programmer, but doesn't that seem pretty crazy?

Sarah

Yep, bizarre indeed; evidently a .wav that's corrupted in such a way that once added to a song it can't be fully cleared. Oh well - glad it's solved!
