Ok a friend of mine is telling me he tried Mac for the first time since =
the 80's.
He tried a 2gig 512mb G5 powerbook and it was totally solid.
He says it was so incredibly solid that they had tons of media playing
and internet running etc.. and not one glitch. No lag nothing.
What is the consensus on Macs for audio apps now?
Would Cubase run lightspeed under Mac opposed to PC?

There's no G5 powerbook. I don't think any of the current Macbook Pros
come with less than 1GB RAM.

The current Intel core 2 duo Macbook Pros are very fast and work great
for audio.

The next version may come out this month with the new support chipset
which should allow access to more than 3GB RAM.

The Macbook (non "pro") is about as fast in everything but graphics. A
little less screen space and no expansion slot, but it should also be
very good for audio.

Can't answer the cubase question, I use Logic Pro.

Cheers,
-Jamie

Hi Brandon,
If it is a Mac Book pro then it will run Cubase about the same as a
equivalent PC. You would not be using 512 megs of ram on any computer
using Xp or OSX. 1gig is the normal for any laptop now. If the guy is
really talking about a g4 laptop then no it will not anything faster
than a current PC or Mac Book pro laptop.

Jamie...the FW bus on the non-pro notebook just plain sucks wind. I would
never reccommend this for audio...ever.

Been there........believe me.

That's the first I've heard of any firewire problems on the Macbook.
What sucks about it? The firewire 400 specs seem to be the same on the
non-pro as on the pro.

My wife uses the previous low end 1GHZ G4 laptop for audio recording
with a firewire interface. Granted she's not stressing it, just doing
VO, but it works fine.

Is anyone here using an Intel Macbook for audio?

The main performance differentiation between the two current Macbook/Pro
lines seems to be the motherboard graphics on the non-pro vs. the faster
graphics cards with the pro (and the available screen res). The mb GPU
capabilities aren't sufficient for programs that really leverage the
GPU, like Apple's Motion and the upcoming Color. BTW, the new version of
Motion and the new Color look amazing, looking forward to working with
them along with the new Final Cut in a few weeks.

Cheers,
-Jamie

I have never had any FW issues. I thought the issues you had with your friend's
box
were more of a driver/OS version conflict related to the 002...

At any rate, I know a whack of guys using MacBooks with FW problem free.

Long story...we can talk about it when I get up there. Just talked to Aaron.
He's about 45 minutes out of Denver right now. I'll be showing up around
