Hi all

Might be a dumb question but do you just archive the session including audio
files (unrendered) to a hard drive or DVD

or

Do you render all the tracks with or without plugins and save those PAFs
with the session

or

Do you render with plugins then convert all your PAFs to wav files and save
those

or

Do you create stems and save those .

or

Do you just wipe that hard drive clean and move on

I just save all the projects to a backup hard drive or DVD if it will fit.
I don't trust DVDs so I would burn 2 copies.

I usually render all the tracks unprocessed and put
them in song folders so they can be transferred to any other system.

Then I give them the full, original PARIS session.

Don't forget track mixes and track w/ background vocals...

Put all this on their drive...

All of course, after the check clears... :)

If it's for me I get around this problem by cagily never finishing anything.
If it's for someone else I usually suggest backing up the project to optical
media and throwing the whole thing onto a hard drive they can stash in a
drawer somewhere. With luck, if they need it down the road one of the other
likely won't be broken. If you want to be extra future proof you might do
an OMF export and/or batch convert the .paf files to .wav files.

For me it's removable hard drive trays. Fill them up, archive the contents
with CDFinder and put away in a dark, dust proof place that never gets too
hot or cold. I keep the drives in trays when in storage, so bringing them
back only takes a few seconds. I only save the original Paris files and project
folder plus project notes. I do generally save a second copy of the final
ppj with plugins removed. Older CDs and DVDs have failed on me. So far,
all my old drives are still working. I do try to spin each drive up once
or twice a year.

Major-label work also gets a DVD written that is kept �off site� in a safety
deposit box at my bank. These projects also get screen shots of plugins and
track layouts as well as wave files rendered. Many labels want finals turned
in a Pro Tools files.

My trays are compatible with the two producers I frequently collaborate with,
so working with them is easy.

For non-Paris projects or collaborations, I generally use wave files or Pro
Tools files on an external Firewire drive. I use the same concept for long-term
storage, but I remove the drives from the Firewire enclosure before storage.

CDFinder creates a nice small searchable database of all the contents of
every hard drive and optical drive I have in storage. It works with both
my Mac and PC storage media. Now that OSX has Spotlight, I can even search
for comments I wrote 10 years ago within my session notes. Like�What song
did I use that Didgeridoo player in around 1999?

For larger sessions, I hand the drive over(that I made the customer
buy in the first place) to the client and wave goodbye! ;-)

For smaller sessions, I give them a CD master and tell them that I
will archive the session for 1 year. If they want a copy, I will burn
DVD's of the folder and charge them for it... or, they can bring a
hard drive in and i will transfer for free.

move on to the next one, I archive on CDR or DVDR.
