Apple has been applying for some very interesting looking patents.

http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Se ct2=HITOFF&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-adv.html&r=0 &p=1&f=S&l=50&Query=in%2Flengeling&d=PG0 1

Touch screen interface, advanced Melodyne like audio manipulation and a drum
quantizing feature that seems like a hybrid between Beat Detective and Sonar’s
time stretching method among others!

The link comes from a Gearslutz post, but you need to read the actual patents
to get an idea what’s going on. Nice Sunday afternoon reading.

Thanks Gene-

I wonder how significant the filing dates are: Dec 02 - Aug 06.
How long before things find their way to Market? Maybe some of these
items have already been mothballed...

You’re right. It’s all speculation at this time. My main concern for Logic
was that Apple would simply use the best parts to construct a new hyper-Garage
Band app and abandon the pro users. The patents give me hope that they are
working on an advanced professional audio application that will rival FCP
(If not PT!)
Apple is well placed to take advantage of powerful multiprocessor hardware
in a true 64bit environment.
The patent on the touch-screen/virtual user interface looks like it could
be quite cool.
Hopefully I’m not just being overly optimistic. Patents on iPhone technology
were very telling about two years ago.
