Hey Guys,
I just got a Emu 1212M interface with the high-end converters. Man,these
converters are fanstasic!! I can't believed that EMU sales this level of
converter for so little..Their new interface box even has soft-limit on the
converters and better mic pres.
This just makes me wonder if ID could make with with EMU and make VSt version
of Paris!!(naitive). I would jump all over this. Really, this card has the
samme converters as the Digi HD192.
I'm hearing things in my Nuendo mixes that I did not hear in my RME Digi
96 PST that it replaced.. The difference is so clear, that it's really make
me think twice about ever purchasing another RME interface.
Dedric, now I can mix with full confidence in Nuendo, like I do in Paris
. Wow!! just $200.00 card!! amazing..
Edmund if you are readingthis post. Please kiss and make with EMU, to make
a naitive version of Paris (drop the midi sequencer). :)smile..
Thanks..LaMont

LOL.
Hey Lamont - Now email EMU and tell them to make an 8 or 16 I/O ADDA with
lightpipe and AES. They haven't listened to me so far.
Seems like it would sell like crazy.
Is that all it took for you to like mixing in Nuendo? ;-)
I was impressed the first time I setup an 1820M for an A/V rig - it was for
live use, so I couldn't really tell that much about the converters, but they
seemed to be very good.
Regards,
Dedric

Is it limited to one card in a system or can you link two for more I/O. That
was the downfall if I remember - but I think it has an adat input right?

Hey Lamont,
How would this thing differ from the 0404 PCI card I just got
for $100?Wondering if I should exchange it if its only $100 more
and would give me more functionality.
I got the 0404 to use with Wavelab for mastering, but might do
the SX/Nuendo thing in the future.
Thanks,
Pete

Well it looks like better converters.Same A/D as HD192,but
different D/A obviously.
I wonder if the D/A is the same as in the 0404 card?It says its
got 24bit/192K converters also.
Little confused;just better A/D or does the 1212 come with 2
PCI cards?Wasn't sure by looking at the picture.

IIRC, the 1212 comes with a daughter card that allows for word clock and
SMPTE code in and out.

Well I just won a 1212m on ebay, nearly new, for $107. It can be upgraded
to the 1820m as I understand it, if desired. The converters are spec'd at
120db. I have been hearing rave reviews on these on some other forums, even
compared to RME. Gonna use it with Samplitude V8 for native system.

Not the same converters in or out - different chips. 111db in and 116db out
on the 0404, 120db in and out on the 1212m. 1212 also has balanced in/out
and ADAT I/0. The 0404 converters are said to sound good, but have heard
that the 1212s have more clarity. Would probably depend on what type of
music you are recording, if the 1212 would be worth the upgrade.

Wonder if, since they're using the same convertors on the 1212
& 1820 as Digi's HD 192, if they're using the same convertors
as Digi's HD 96 on the 0404?

yep. I have both cards 0404 and the 1212M. The 1212M has more clarity and
definition. This not to say that the 0404 is bad sounding, it's not. Teh
0404 (to me) is the best sounding $100.00 card on the market and can out
perform many $1k cards.
P.S.
I just had a conversation with E-Mu support. I called to see if I could purchase
the new 1616M dock, due to it's new mic pres with built-in soft limit. Here's
the rsponse:
"Dear Mr. Davis,
After speaking with our test lab department, I've found that the 1010 card
with the 1212M and the 1010 card with the 1616 PCI have design differences
that will not allow the 1616 Dock to function on the 1010 card from the 1212M.
The 1616PCI uses a new 1010 card that has different electronics and no power
cable, because the 1616 docks use a 48V wall wort whereas the 1820M was powered
via the EDI cable. Also, when the dock is attached SPDIF/ADAT on the 1010
will be disabled.
I hope this information will assist you in determining what else to add to
your rig. Please don't hesitate to contact us again if there's anything else
we can do to assist."
I was also told by the Support Rep that they are agreesively testing and
implementing "Multi-Card capabilities. The holkd up is that E-MU has to re-write
the mixer application.

Hi Edna,
To me, E-Mu cards blows the sonic doors off of RME. In comparisons, the RME
cards sounds "stale" & Lifeless. Where as, the E-Mu cards(1212M 1820M) sound
alive with depth..

Hey Dedric!!
Here's what I got from E-MU..
Dear Mr. Davis,
After speaking with our test lab department, I've found that the 1010 card
with the 1212M and the 1010 card with the 1616 PCI have design differences
that will not allow the 1616 Dock to function on the 1010 card from the 1212M.
The 1616PCI uses a new 1010 card that has different electronics and no power
cable, because the 1616 docks use a 48V wall wort whereas the 1820M was powered
via the EDI cable. Also, when the dock is attached SPDIF/ADAT on the 1010
will be disabled.
I hope this information will assist you in determining what else to add to
your rig. Please don't hesitate to contact us again if there's anything
else we can do to assist.
I asked about "multi card" capabilities. He stated that they are working
on it and the only hold back is that they have rewrite the Mixer software
to accomodate multicards..So, stay tuned :)

HI Lamont,
I agree that yes the RME Digi-968 card designed over 8 years ago by RME
does not sound as good as the higher-end EMU cards. They don't to me
sound as good as the newer RME converters on the Fireface, Multiface and
their stand alone converters. But there is allot more to making a good
sounding AD/DA then just the converter chips used. For the money EMU has
done a great job on the hardware design of their converters but hey when
you have the buying power of Creative Labs behind you then I would
think so. The only things I don't like about the EMU stuff is the mixer
applet. It's way to convoluted for such a simple card. Also the lack of
larger I/O cards but sense they are marketing the stuff mostly to a home
enthusiast market it makes sense why they don't.

There's a 1212M refurb on EBay right now for $159.00 and an Emulator X
add-on for $115.00. I'm tempted, but this hardware just doesn't have the I/O
options that I need.

Hey Chris,
I have not hear the new RME stuff. I would hope that their interfaces got
upgraded in the sound dept. Another card woth mentioning is the M-Audio Audiophile
192. This cards converters are in aanother league form their (m-Audios) previous
offerings.
Also, like I stated in another post, E-Muis working on updating their Mixer
app to accmodate multi card usage.

a good review on the 1616 (laptop) version also. Does a desktop coversion
card exist somewere to use a PCMCIA (PC card) in a desktop?

Hi Rich,
They are completing work on a 1010 PCI crd for the 1616(M). However, you
can get a PCI(PCMIA) card converter card.
Check here for the card:

Hey Lamont, can't wait to get it in, I'll finally have some 24bit
converters. Couldnt afford the RME. Wish I could afford the 1820m, maybe
later I can add the dock and sync card to make it into one.

Hi Lamont,
Yes agreed on the audiophile 192k very good sounding. I hope E-MU
updates the usability of the damn mixer applet. The routing method sucks
balls. Don't know how useful multi-card functions will be unless they
are putting out PCI-E and or more USB or Firewire I/O options. MOst of
the new laptops do not have PCMCIA slots on them only the new Express
card slots. New motherboard have at most 3 PCI slots. The next wave will
have 2 or less.
