Well..........yeah, except for the clients who like bursts of noise in their
mixes. Clipping the kick and snare can really get a nice grungy rythmic vibe
going, and if properly focused through a tube out the window, and skyward, I
can actually disturb the electronics in passing aircraft.

It's only bluegrass in these parts if you are using the same tube to try to
bring down aircraft with bursts of noise and as a means of shotgunning a
huge reefer when not in antiaircraft mode. It's hard to believe that people
who are so loaded on ganja can move their fingers so fast.

I beleive that's not the actual channel, but the summing bus clipping. The
channels are 32 bit floating point, hence effectively unclippable. The summing
bus isn't, hence if you feed a channel with the clip light on into the summing
bus, the summing bus clips at the input stage. Hence on normal Cubase systems,
whenever a channel clips you hear clipping, but it's not the channel itself
that clips. It's the moment the channel outputs to the summing bus.
What I don't understand is why doesn't Deej get the same clipping happenning
when the floating point Cubase channels output to the ADAT? Seems to me that
the linear ADATs should suffer from the same issue as the Cubase summing
bus.
Cheers,
Kim.

Is this the summing bus equivalent of if a tree falls in the forest does it
make a sound?

Well that depends, is it a 32 bit floating point forest? ;o)

Yes, "in principle" 32-bit float shouldn't clip, but
SOMETHING's clipping in there... maybe what Chuck and I are
hearing is the convertors clipping at the output stage? Dunno.
I can't say as I'm hearing the summing buss clipping on input,
otherwise once you started feeding a handful of channels to it,
it would clip all the time, right?
I dunno, I seem to be able to get SX to clip, even when I've
got a brickwall limiter strapped across the 2-buss... you still
have to kind of watch it, as it were, because even under those
circumstances, if you push it too hard, you can hear it get a
bit murky/unclear/distorted - I'm not talking about those
harsh "digital overs" like snaps & dropouts, but it's
something that's not very pretty... not a good type of
distortion.
You just have to be careful, is all - it's not a big deal, the
easiest way to deal with it that I've found is each time after
you add/record a track, simply bring that channel down to -6 db
& that way you've got some headroom everywhere to raise a few
things up if needed, and obviously, plenty of room to go down,
as well.
Deej is taking individual channels & groups out of SX & into
Paris via lightpipe, so maybe that's part of the difference.

I can definitely clip the track if I'm looping it through an insert to/from
an external processor, so I would say you are correct sir.
