Hi all,
This is my first time posting to this site, which I just found. Looks great.

I have used Paris since 1998, and Paris Pro since 2001. I use it on a PC w/ Windows 98 and it has ALWAYS worked exceptionally well.

I just finished mixing my new cd (a double!) and was messing around with some remixes, when POP, the whole computer just powered down.

I restarted it (several times) and when I tried opening up Paris I got the "Unhandled Exception 000005: address" with a file name.

I went online and saw a fix, which had me de-install Paris, which I did. Of course, when I went to re-install it, I realized that I hadn't seen the disc in years.

My question is - what next? Is there a place I can find another copy of Paris Pro? Or should I move over to the ProTools world?

I've considered that, but really LOVE Paris and know it like the back of my hand.

Appreciate your input.

Tom

Hey Tom! Glad you found us, and welcome!

You should be able to download Paris 3.0 direct from EMU's site and be back up and running in minutes - see this thread for more info on timing your authorization. Check out the various notes at the Wiki about that particular unhandled exception, there are several entries.

PARIS 2.2 software is available at that link and it's free. PARIS 3.0 is $100 (I believe - I paid for mine years ago) [edited eight months later to add: that's because I bought it used as a license transfer - I had no idea at that time that it could possibly be $295 new!]; you download and install it and that starts a seven day trial period. Within that period (I'd do it at the beginning to avoid it expiring before you get an authorization), you receive a challenge code which you email to Intelligent Devices along with payment and receive an authorization key in return.

You don't have to go with 3.0, some people haven't. But it does have some very cool features.

That's right. The original, free XP drivers do work, and lots of folks have used them for the last five years continuously by working within their limitations, and the same could be said for PARIS 2.2.

But to get the most out of your PARIS rig, IMHO buying PARIS 3.0 ($100) and Mike's drivers ($50) is definitely the way to go. The drivers you saw advertised on ebay were the same ones available at Mike's link (:: mikeaudet :: at the top of this page).

Well, I tried for hours last night to install, with no luck.

I kept getting an error message when the install was at 44%. I think my hard drive may have been corrupted in the crash. I tried scanning the disc for errors and it just keeps crashing. Maybe a Win98 file was corrupted too?

Now I've gotta figure out a new plan.

The strange and fortunate thing is that I just finished mixing a huge project that has taken 2 years, our fourth album in 10 years. So I guess I'll have time to contemplate next steps.

I'll be in touch and thanks!

Sounds like the perfect time to treat yourself to an upgrade - new HD, install of XP, the new drivers and PARIS 3.0 Very Happy

Man, you were so lucky with the timing. SOP for computers is to wait until just before an important delivery to die.

I know Kerry...I literally was going in to try an alternate mix of one tune, which has an extended intro.

Was gonna cut it down in Paris, but I have been able to do the same thing in WaveLab already.

I have been working on the new cd for almost 2 years and we recorded something like 25 tunes...gonna use the best 20.

For once, Murphy's Law doesn't prevail.

Now, onto building a new computer for Paris Pro in XP...any info out there on this? I literally am looking for a checklist of stuff I need (already have a MEC with 12 inputs and the associated cards, plus the Control 16.

I spoke to another fellow named Mike who was a great help, a few months back, but my lack of technical expertise made me stay with Win98.

Do not quote me on this (because I didn't build it) but I'm pretty sure my new rig has

ASUS P5B motherboard
Intel P965 chipset
Intel Q-9400 Processor
4 gigs DDR2-1066/PC2-8500 Ram

600 watt power supply / Dual head video card / DVD burner /160 gig program drive / 500 gig data drive / 500 gig hot swappable drive all mounted in a 4 rack space server case

This rig houses two EDS cards and two UAD-1e cards and so far is solid as a rock.

That complete system came in at just over $700 CAD of course we got some sweet used deals i.e. the MB and the RAM but everything else was new...so I'm guessing all new would have been around $1000 CAD
