Oh man...I'm still laughing, ten minutes later! It's some of the comments
that people wrote that get me. like "JESUS MAN! BUTTER THE TOAST!"
I guess he used too much. I'm sure Kim or Martin can set us straight.

Right there with man, I"ve never had the stuff but that's the general
reaction I've heard in the past. Even the veg lovers have told me to go easy
on that stuff, LIGHTLY spread it and it's an aquired taste.
That was pretty dang funny Bill, even though I was pretty sure I knew (and
maybe because) what was coming for ole' dude.

It's really not terrible, but you don't spread it like peanut butter. A
little goes a long way.

It's been years since I had it, but as I recall it's salty and tangy -
what the Brits call "savory". It does not taste like vegetables
particularly. I can't really say it is like anything else, so it's tough
to describe. Maybe if you took a cube of concentrated vegetable broth
and spread it.

It's a Yeast Extract... that and salt I think. ;o)

I have a jar here. It's ingredients in order of quantity is:

Yeast Extract
Salt
Mineral Salt
Malt Extract (from Barley)
Color
....and then various vitamins added... mostly B group.

It doesn't taste like anything else really, other than Marmite. While it
tastes nothing like it, the closest I can relate it to is perhaps Soy Sauce,
largely because of the importance of salt to both.

Cheers,
Kim.

Not the same, but it's the only thing I've ever tried which is similar. Kinda
a different brand of the same stuff.

Cheers,
Kim.

Hehe, ok, I'll give you the low down on how to taste it. Indeed I may be
willing to send some to anybody interested, but don't expect to love it first
bite. That said, to have it as we like it:

(*) Fresh bakery bread or toast - HOT. No half stale bread, cold toast or
supermarket loaves. They can be ok, but they'll never compare to fresh bread
or hot toast.

(*) Note that vegemite is a spread you have when you're having nothing on
your bread. It's like you put butter on. Then treat vegemite as like a herb
or spice which just needs a touch. Apply it like you might apply a medium
hotness chilli paste. You can always put more on.

(*) Vegemite works ok if you hardly have any at all. You can just have fresh
bread and (preferably REAL) butter, and then just the smallest scrape of
vegemite on a piece of bread. Once you get used to it you learn how much
you like, but you're far safer to put less than more.

A lot of Australians seem to agree that if you want to really appreciate
a piece of freshly baked bread, you have to have it either on it's own, with
just butter, or with just butter and vegemite. When you spread Vegmite it
shouldn't cover the toast. There should be scrapings of it with gaps in between.
And no thickness to it. Maybe 1/16th inch of vegemite just here and there
on the toast/bread.

From a guy who's 35 and eats vegemite several times a week, while I'm sure
I wouldn't have reacted like the guy in the video, I saw that piece of toast
and with no butter and that massive amount of vegemite I don't think I would
have eaten it either. ;o)

Cheers,
Kim.

Why not just salt your bread? Sounds like dyed, salted, yeast to me (and
mineral salt to boot... yikes).
And since butter already has salt in it, and bread has yeast, and dye is
usually to
keep you from hurling at the sight of the original color....that leaves the
final question... why? ;-)

I think I'll stick to peanut butter, jam, cheese, or honey.

Well bed with salted butter tastes pretty good, but Vegemite doesn't taste
like just salt.

So I guess you won't be asking me to ship you some then? ;o)

Marmite to me tastes the same only not as strong. You have to put a lot more
on, which might be why people who are pre-warned possibly prefer Marmite.
Personally I prefer Vegemite, but perhaps that's like people who eat chilli
for years. Eventually you use more and more... ;o)

Cheers,
Kim.

The following link has a pic to the right:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite

The pic shows a "normal" amount of vegemite on toast. As you can see it's
spread nowhere near as thick as it was in the video, and the toast is, in
fact, buttered. ;o)

Cheers,
Kim.

Checked the wiki on it and it says, "Vegemite is made from leftover
brewers' yeast extract, a by-product of *beer manufacture*..." (emphasis
added)

Now I know why you Ozzies love it so much. Duh!

Major mistake.
He should have buttered the toast first.

Hehe, I'm pretty sure that's an old wives tale, but if it's on wikipedia...

Hehe. They are a little bland IMO. I prefer either toast, or just one slice
of fresh bread or bread roll for my Vegemite. Alternatively a slice of cheese
goes alright in a Vegemite sandwich... ...I'm not sure that Spam really
should be stocked on supermarket shelves, and the idea of it with Vegemite
I find rather troubling. ;o)

Cheers,
Kim.

Personally, I prefer a good old English "bitey" cheese, aged over a long
period to give it that edge.

Vegemite? Sure. :o) Email me. The Post Office seriously is next to the Supermarket,
so...

No politics? Hehe. I wouldn't say it's none. I'd say there's a fair bit.
;o) I don't think I'm a Nazi moderator. ;o) I'd like to think not.

But seriously, if anybody hasn't tried Vegemite and is interested, why not?
Email me. If we get too many I may have to ask for donations, but next time
I go shopping I could probably ship 20 off in half an hour, so I'm up for
it. :o) If people posted back with pics it could be quite a hoot. ;o)

You'd have to eat it in the studio for the pic though, I guess. ;o)

Cheers,
Kim.

PS. My Paris system is still broken. I must fix it. ;o)

WENSLEYDALE:
Good morning, sir. Welcome to the National Cheese Emporium.

MOUSEBENDER:
Ah, thank you my good man.

WENSLEYDALE:
What can I do for you, sir?

MOUSEBENDER:
Well, I was, uh, sitting in the public library on Thurmond
Street just now, skimming through Rogue Herries by Hugh
Walpole, and I suddenly came over all peckish.

WENSLEYDALE:
Peckish, sir?

MOUSEBENDER:
Esurient.

WENSLEYDALE:
Eh?

MOUSEBENDER:
Eeeeee, I were all hungry, like!

WENSLEYDALE:
Ah, hungry.

MOUSEBENDER:
In a nutshell. And I thought to myself, 'a little fermented
curd will do the trick'. So I curtailed my Walpoling activites,
sallied forth, and infiltrated your place of purveyance to
negotiate the vending of some cheesy comestibles.

WENSLEYDALE:
Come again?

MOUSEBENDER:
I'd like to buy some cheese!

:D

Thanks guys! I'm starting to wonder if I was aussie in another life or
something. Everything about this vegemite deal sounds like stuff I already
love, including the sharp cheddar. I can't believe I've waited this late in
life to investigate it for myself.
Any preference for shredded or slices?
