Really, *really* good luck with the UA610. It's pretty magnificent,
particularly at the price point.

LOL!! (...and I know you will!, for I am a mere buffoon, who's
ears were once "golden" [puke], but the perfect pitch is still
reasonably intact).
My preferred mic WAS an MXL V69, before it became noisy.
(a U47 a client insisted on hiring for a session came a close
second), but now I have to use my Rode Classic II until I get
the V69 sorted.
Then into a Focusrite Green voice box.
Pretty low rent compared to you guys, but what the hey..
it's what one does in the context of a mix that counts, right??
(During mixing I use Ozone, pretty deep, with 15 ms latency,
but lovely nonetheless.
Incidentally a friend brought round his prized single channel
Avalon preamp for a session, dunno the model, but it looks funky),
and we both agreed there was no perceivable
difference between it and one of the strips
on my Soundcraft Vienna MK1.
Don't get me wrong, I love good gear,
and all those bakelite knobs look really cool, but I'd rather pay off my
house first.

Anyone tried these out yet? Vince Gill and Amy Grant seem to like them, and
I might be off base but I seem to recall being pleasantly surprised by the
price.

Yup, you shanked that one Deej. He he ;-)
The other place that mic found LOTS of work was, of all places, guitar cabs.
I tracked all of my geetars using the 'Steve Albini Technique.' One dark
mic (the SE ribbon), and one bright mic (the green/gold Claytor) pointed
pretty close to the middle of the cone about a foot back. The guys in the
band had a great time making fun of me meticulously lining up the mic capsules
so they were as close to exactly the same distance off the speaker, and to
each other, as I could manage. What a sound, and EQ is almost never needed,
just mix the two mics together.
It also sounds great on one of the singers in the Monkies. He has a thinner,
higher speaking voice than rest of us and somehow the Claytor beefs his vox
up a bit. It's just a little more flattering than the BLUE.
Oh, that Claytor is also a GREAT acoustic guitar mic. I used it on all of
the acoustics pointed right at the neck at about the 10th fret. Lovely percussive
sounding acoustic geetars. Yup, that mic really sucks.

Did you ever get a chance to try the Dave Thomas modded APEX mics with the
Peluso caps?
The reason I ask is that Dave is a friend of a friend and lives locally. The
friends I know that have them completely rave about them - the prime
complaint that I heard about the Thomas mods online, that he hit a bad patch
with servicing orders and took a hit to his reputation, is apparently not an
issue if you're local. I'd imagine he got bitten by the old "expertise in
one's field of specialization does not automatically confer expertise at
running a business past a certain level of complexity" thing.
Curious if anyone had any experience with them.

what she knows about mics can't be too much - I mean she's got frickin'

Just wondering, because I know Mike did Deej's with a Peluso
capsule & the one you got from me was the "oringal" project mod,

Hey Neil,
There _is_ a difference, but it's small enough that it's hard to put into
words. And I'm usually pretty good with words. The one Deej sold me is a
touch brighter, and a touch more present. It's almost a spacial thing, the
Deej mic sounds closer, more intimate. I used the one you sold me as a mono
room mic on drums because I liked the slightly more distant sound. I used
the Deej mic on acoustic guitars because I liked the 'closer' sound. Again,
I'm probably not doing a good job describing here.
The mics sounded different enough that I decided not to use them as overheads,
and I _really_ wanted to use them. I wound up using NT-5s and they sound
like crap. I think the drums on this CD are just going to suck, which is
sad. The songs are good, the playing is good, the other sounds are good,
but the drums just blow. Anyway, next time I'll have Claytorbuilt mics as
overheads and on the toms, and the drums will kick booty.
Thanks for the Claytor and the Bottle, they're both getting serious use.

Of course you get right of first refusal. In fact, if you want it back for
a particular session or project, just say the word. It has that fancy case
and everything. Easy to ship.
Once the Monx are done with this CD I'm back to working on my own stuff,
which is all beeps and blips and synth noises. No need for mics of any kind.
So the loverly sounding green and gold Claytor will just be sitting in a
closet, waiting for something to reproduce.

P.S. My second favorite guitar is my Les Paul gold top. I met the guy who
sold it to me some time around 1990. I sat in with his band one night, played
the guitar and said to him, 'If you ever want to sell this, just let me know.'
No big push, just a friendly thing, that it was a really special guitar.
Whenever I would see him around town I'd buy us a drink and mention, 'You
still have that Les Paul?' About five years ago he called me and said he'd
take $1500 for the LP. Here's the funny part, HE asked ME for a right of
first refusal if I ever sell the gold top. I think I'm in a long term rental
situation, but it's still in my house. And sounds like the wrath of god.
