Went well. I'm definitely going to have to get my head around the whole cue
mix functionality and punching in/out though. that's someting I knew I'd
miss about Paris. It is just so great for tracking and punching (sigh).

Well anyway.......time for another learning curve to begin.

O'yeah.........also, I think I'm gonna miss the Paris converters. I'm using
RME ADI8-DS and Multiface here and they are just so friggin uncolored that
it's sorta' startling. I think Paris converters have a bit of a
darker/sweet/mellow coloration that is part of the overall vibe of the
system. I'm so used to hearing the Paris conversion that it's absence was
pretty obvious.

So your saying that if you at least keep a 8 to 16 channel analog Paris
setup you could have used it as a summing buss!!!

Hi Deej,

I don't get to use that many of the cue mix functions in Cubase but I've
found the punch in/ out and general recording functions way easier than
any program I've ever used.
Especially when you setup a folder track for your multi track recording.
Major fun being able to hit one button to punch in and out of 100 tracks
at once with one key command and no hiccups or pause when doing it. The
asterisk key is your friend...

Check out page 152 of the manual. Using any of the 4 cue mixes, you can
select a bunch of tracks in the regular mixer then go to the control
room mixer and right click over a single Studio (cue mix) and tell it to
paste all of the selected track levels to the cue mix for starting
point or even change the volume of all the cue mix sends. VERY nice.

If you don't right click over a Studio mix then it applies to all
Studios. Seems nicely done.

Also check out stacked mode which allows you to loop a section and build
up takes for you to comp. Tricks like holding down the Alt (i think
it's Alt) and clicking on events let you switch to scissors tool quickly.

Once you stack up a bunch of takes you can cut them up with scissors as
it's looping then drag them with CTRL to constrain (I think it's CTRL)
and press x to cross fade them all. What don't you like about punch in,
seems to work fine here.

Stacked mode to me is a killer tool.

Just read my notes and it says: With Alt + Ctrl you also constrain
vertical movement. (handy when copying from track to track or between
lanes in parts)

Need printable shortcuts? See below. Also, setup a couple of
workspaces (views) as quickly as possible to get it so you can jump
around from project window with mixer/transport on the bottom to mixer
window with everything expanded etc.. You'll just hit num key pads and
enter to jump around.

I just find it easier to push the faders up on the DM2k in
aux mode to get the mix I want... ;-)

I did think long and hard about this but decided that if I was going to make
the jump, that I wanted to try to work within the framework of a single
platform. I'm going to need to get a little time on this sytem before I
change my mind about that.. I am waiting for another HDSP 9652 to show up as
I'm going to be running a second DAW via system link to offload VSTi's so I
still haven't figured out how to *totally* simplify things, but system link
is *supposed* to work and V-Stack *should* integrate nicely, especially
since I'm using the same hardware on both DAWs so I can duplicate buffers
exacly. I still think that this system will work for me sonically, but the
RME AD/DA's are so noticably different that it's going to take a while to
adjust.
Not impossible to do, just a different way to go about getting there.

Deej for the stuff you do (mostly acoustic-oriented), you will
prolly end up loving the cleanliness of the RME's - I mean you
can always dirty stuff up later, and if you're using that Neve
Tape Sim box, you'll no doubt get plenty of veiling from that.
There's color to be had - its just nice when you can start out
pristine! Download Gene's fav - Color Tone Free Version for a
start!

I will check it out Chris. thanks. I've got a Neve 5042 here. I'm going to
post up a couple of clips A/B'in it on guitar/vocal track. It should be
interesting to compare the 5042 to the Tapesim.
