How Good is the UAD-1 Fairchild? [message #72374] Thu, 14 September 2006 08:58 Go to next message

While it is unlikely that many, if any, here have had a chance to compare
it to the real thing, I'm wondering how it sounds. It doesn't get mentioned
as much as the other UAD plugs. Anyone using it much?

Thanks

Gary,

You're right, I doubt I'd get any chance ever of comparing it to the real
deal. I mean, after all, there's only 10 or 20 real Fairchild's here in
central Iowa (a that's a joke, son!). Anyway, I do use it from time to time,
but it definitely seems to impart a lot of "color". I suppose that's what
makes it so popular though.

No direct comparison, but I have rented the NY, Dreamhire 670 several times
over the years and I have used the units at Electric Lady and Power Station
(Avatar).
All three are slightly different (no direct comparison, just a feeling).
The UAD-1 is also different, but the UAD-1 emulation gives the same basic
character, which makes me very happy to have it. I would still use/rent a
real unit for a major mix.

Gene,
Where/when would you want to use the Fairchild?
Main bus, drums or other?

I like it most on bass. Typically I will use a DBX 160VU but if I am looking
for “More”, I will go with a Fairchild. Very Beatlesque. For me this is not
an appropriate sound for big production tracks, but it works great on more
sparse arrangements. I will try it on anything that seems it would benefit
from a little magic sauce, but it has always been a case-by-case thing. I
never found it worked on vocals. I never used the real unit for more than
one or two db of reduction - same with the UAD-1 plug.

Gene,
You know I was able to just touch a jazz 2 mix to add
some warmth to it and I don't think it compressed
more than 1-2db only on peaks. I have also used on overheads
for that late 60s trippy cymbal wash sound the Beatles use to get. =20
That was really cool. I'll give it a whirl on bass next chance I get.
I have a 161VU that is great for bass. That's a fact.
Damn that third pin!
Tom
