OK, Ubuntu 7.1 on a Dell 1720. Had to change drive from AHCI mode to ATA (same
for XP/Vista or load drivers at startup) and it didn't catch my on board
audio card. Everything else worked off the hop.
I'm still a Debian guy, so I'm ripping it off and putting Debian 64 bit on
it anyway, but this is the first distro I've ever put on that was _easier_
than an XP install. Most impressive.

I'm surfing on Ubuntu 7.1 right now.
Annoyed me at v 7.0 that only one screen worked, which was a weird one given
how much other cool stuff it DID have. That's fixed in 7.1
I think there will be Linux on a machine at my place for quite a while starting
about now. Not sure Vista is going to get a look in on my watch.

GNU\Linux distros have to make some choices about how they deal with proprietary
drivers. Some of the more strict ones (most notably, Debian itself) simply
makes you figure it out yourself. Some (SuSE, Mandrivia) kind of nod and
wink and give helpful suggestions or offer to install drivers for you. Ubuntu
actually has the drivers packaged and ready to go, just tick a box in the
right control panel and you're off using the nVidia or ATI binaries.
In an ideal world the video card companies would publish specs and not enforce
NDAs on free software developers, that's what Intel and most of the mobo
manufacturers do, as well as pretty much all of the hardware vendors in the
enterprise space. For now, Ubuntu is the best option if you don't want to
learn how to manage stuff like this on your own.
It's a big step, imho.
