I need to add a 2nd drive to a Dell Dimension 9100 for audio. A couple of
questions:

1) Are 10,000 rpm drives louder than comparable 7,500 rpm drives?
2) I've seen recommendations for Western Digital. Are these reliable?

Gary,
The latest I've heard is that WDs had some issues a year or so ago
but they are supposed to be fine now. I was told to get Seagates
and had one die before it finished formatting last week. I don't think
the noise level is all that different from a 7200 vto a 10,000rpm.

I'm buying WDs again and see what gives. Some are even using Maxtors =
again.
I know Chris Ludwig speced them into a system I will have him build.

No failures of any kind.

If you want to be sure, go on their website and give them a call
about it. They answer their phones and the phone support people
are quite informed.

I can get you a stack of failed seagates if you want. hehe. They all fail,
that's why I recommended the warranty. I have returned a bunch of all brands,
fujitsu the most recent. Keep the temp around 32 degrees for good hard drive
life. Heat is the killer.

I can show you hundreds of Avid editors with thousands of
hours of video editing, and a near-zero failure rate. This from
people who build and supply Avid editiors to the industry.

All they will use is Seagate.

Maxtors suck, Maxtors are the best, WD sucks, WD are the best, Seagate sucks,
and Seagate are the best. hehe

Drives are mechanical devices with moving parts, all will eventually fail.
RAID or uncommonly fastidious backups are the only way to guard against drive
failures. A particular band won't help.

If you're doing audio, you don't need 10k drives, though they usually won't
be noticably louder than the 7.2k brothers.

I wouldn't center and brand names too much. All drive makers have had good
and bad moments, though Maxtor certainly was the one who most recently got
a bad rap. I've been using mostly Seagate drives for a while, but when I've
seen deals on other brands I'll take them unless there is a really good reason
not to.

If your mobo has a RAID controller think about using it. There's nothing
quite as pleasant for a computer geek as a drive failing and it slowing workflow
down for twenty minutes with nearly zero chance of data loss.

Depends on which band you are speaking of. Some bands are
helpful indeed.

As far as manufacturers, there are significant failure-rate
differences among them, in the experience of hard users in the editing world.

No maxtors for me man. I order 7 GX620's with those and one died from =
light business use of less than a year. I now have 8 more of them and =
even Dell got wise to it and are putting seagates in them because the =
failure rate was killin' them.

Even if there are 'significant' differences in failure rates between brands,
which I doubt except in rare cases of faulty gear, that doesn't mean anything
for an individual user. Seagate sells roughly 100 million drives per year.
If 99.9 percent of them are 'good' that means there are 100,000 that are
'bad.' That's a great quality job by Seagate. But for an individual user
who buys two or three drives for a workstation only one of them has to be
bad for that event to be potentially catastrophic to the individual. That
doesn't mean it's smart to buy crappy drives that just got fished out of
a pond, but that a RAID 5 array will assure data integrity in all cases where
only one (or two, depending on how many spares you can afford) drive fails.
The the user is fine unless he/she has _two_ of those 100,000 bad drives
and both of them decided to die on the same day. At that point we're probably
in 'computer gets struck by lightning' or 'squirrells steal computer' territory
for probability.

RAID is certainly the ticket for serious users.

Hey, you just about formulated Don's law of technology, which
states:

All equipment fails at some point and all equipment has defective
examples. Therefore, if you have enough pieces of gear, your
failure probability will reach 100% for any given session.

I'm sure there is a Deej corollary somewhere as well..
