Hype? Yes and no.

On my 5 string bass I definitely heard a big difference. My gtr is fatter
through that cable also. I'm sold there on an audible difference.

Speaker cables? Well, let's just say I've been doing stuff like using
stranded 3 conductor electical cord for years for my PA stuff and I've yet
to hear a difference between those and the 'built' cables that cost way, way
more. Be hard pressed to sell me on the speaker cable bit for normal length
runs (50 ft or less in my apps) sounding any better.

I'm with you Aaron. One night I accidentally grabbed a homemade 30'
Belden cable for my guitar, and I thought my preamp was broken. I
usually use a shorter Belden cable, about 16' or so. For hi impedance
instruments "better" or shorter is usually better, unless you're looking
for a duller sound. I hate the first gig on new strings with my Ibanez
"335" 'cause it's too dang twangy.

I've never heard much difference in speaker wire. I also have used
electrical cable successfully.

I have owned (and broken) several Monster instrument cables...they sound
good..The George L. cables sound just as good for electric guitar, and easy
to customize lenghts..The weirdest "hype" from Monster their labeling of
cables for"Jazz" or "Rock"...I really try to hear the difference between
those.....The good thing about Monster is the lifetime warranty..they give
me new cables when they break.. Length does matter....( ask my wife)

I have some Monster mic cables & speaker cables (both the
regular side-by-side zip cord variety, as well as the phone
jack ones for amp cabs) I can DEFINITELY hear a difference
between the Monster mic cables & a couple of low-end cables of
the same length that i keep as spares/emergency use only; but
then again, i can hear a difference between those lo-end ones
& some other good quality mic cables i have, as well, that
AREN'T Monster brands... i don't beleive I can hear a
difference between the Monster mic cables & the other high-end
ones I have. On the speaker cable end of things, I like the
Monster stuff because it really is pretty heavy-duty, and if
you're running a 20-foot cable from an amp head in the control
room to a speaker cab in an iso room, it can get stepped on &
kicked often enough to where I think it's worth having a good,
well-built cable for the task. Now, for the zip cord version
(on my regular home stereo), i do feel that i can hear a slight
difference between the Monster stuff & the speaker cables I had
before that, which were smaller gauge ones - but that could
simply be a matter of a larger gauge wire is going to have less
resistance... i haven't tried out any other heavy gauge brands
in that application.
