Hey,

Been busily adding old Led Z to my iPod, and it reminded me of something
I noticed back when I first bought LZ III. Did anyone else notice a change
in Robert Plant's voice between II and III? I was noticing how full and
throaty his high notes are on the first two albums, like on "Communication
Breakdown" and "The Lemon Song," and it seems like starting on III his high
range got kind of squeaky and falsetto-ish. Did he fry his throat a bit on
their early tours? Was the real Robert Plant replaced by an alien? Am I
just imagining the whole thing?

Stay tuned for these and other terribly important questions on the next
episode of How Sarah Wastes Her Precious Spare Time.

could it be that the acoustic songs reveal different spectral components of
his voice? His voice on Immigrant Song wails just like the early stuff
right?

No, see that's a good example of what I'm talking about. I always thought
that "Aaaaaaaaa-aah!" from Immigrant Song sounded like falsetto, and kinda
wimpy. Compare that to the long "Baaaaaaaaaaaaaabe!" after the first solo
break in The Lemon Song (about 2:25 in).

Stuff like this is why Zep is my favorite R & R band.

There's an annoying little ad at the beginning of this. After that is's
major thunder and lightning.

Bonzo will never die.

Yeah, love that guy. He hits his drums really hard. :) And Bob's in fine
voice there.

Yeah,

Ol' Bob hit some pretty good high ones didn't he? This was around 1980, long
after the ZepIII album. I'm with you though, Bob lost some of his upper
range zing after Zep II.

Bonzo wasn't really the "basher" that most people think of him
as... yeah he had a big drum sound, but i think that was partly
due to the 26" kick, and the way he tuned his snare (which was a
metal one - which makes a difference, as well); he really had
a lot of subtle finesse that he doesn't get much credit for.
Look closely at that video clip you posted - he's not hammering
with as much velocity as you might think!

Hardest-hitting drummer that I EVER saw was someone you wouldn't
even think would play that way - at least based on his style -
and that was Neil Peart of Rush... check it:

Check out the overhead shot at 1:26, and then the cutaway/side-
shot at 1:29... his sticks are moving like THREE TIMES the
distance of Bonham's in the video clip you posted for Kashmir!
And that's not even as hard as he used to hit 'em, either.

Neil (who's favorite Zep song is "Achilles' Last Stand" - see
link below of an amateur video montage assembled over the
studio cut of this song... a great Bonham track!)
