Ok Folks,

Thinking about trying some ribbon mics. Friend of mine has got a couple
I can try out but I don't have any Pres that I know for sure will work
with them. Don't wan to find out the hard way. Really need to know if
anyone can recommend a reasonably priced i.e., under $1k mic pre that
will sound nice and work well for a ribbon mic. Is there such a thing
for that price?

I don't think you will find anything even close to this for the price.
http://www.atlasproaudio.com/aea.html
Especially spec'ed for ribbons and also killer for dynamic mics, or so the
reviews say.
It's built by Fred Forssell.
That's about the only endorsement I would need.

Chris,

Any high gain/low noise preamp should work. Just be sure to wear a welders
mask if you apply phantom power
seriously...don't use phantom power unless the ribbon mic is speced for it
(I think Royer has the only phantom ribbon mic around these days) Phantom
can toast the ribbon. You should be good with any preamp if it's capable of
around 60dB gain and doesn't hiss like a pit of vipers. I use my Great River
MP2-MH for ribbons and also my Forssell JMP-6. Both are 60dB capable and
dead quiet even at maximum settings. An Avalon 737 can also drive a ribbon
and you can probably find one of those if you go dumpster diving in Beverley
Hills.

My Mackie VLZ-Pro preamps will actually drive my sE ribbon mic.

Cheers,

Deej

Grace also has a version of the 101 that's better suited for
ribbons - goes up to +70db, IRC.

$600-something street price.

And Grace products sucketh not.

I have two and I can attest that they rock. Absolutely one of
my best gear investments, without a doubt.

I've plugged a Royer into my Sytek and there's plenty of gain there. Steve
Albini (one of my engineering heroes) reportedly uses Sytek pres with his
Coles ribbons. They're under $1k for four channels.

Hmmm.....thanks for the heads up. I've got a Sytek and I've never used it
with a ribbon mic. I'm going to be tracking a dobro tomorrow night. I'm
thinking about using one of my Manley Baby blues on the resonator and a
ribbon close on the neck so I can nail some of the grit'n grind from the
slide. I've tried this before with a 4050 but it was a little peaky(and the
4050 isn't a *peaky* mic IMO) Maybe my sE ribbon would do the trick for
this. The Sytek would be a good pre. I don't want to color it up too much,
other than use the HF rolloff that the ribbon provides.
