Audio Apps in XP on the MacBook Pro - report. [message #66261]

I installed M-Audio drivers for an Audiophile Firewire interface.
Both MIDI I/O and Audio I/O worked fine. I ran SPDIF out to my main rig.
The built in SPDIF connectors also work but don�t have ASIO drivers, so under
XP the latency is higher. In OSX the SPDIF ports seem fast.
I tried several apps including V-Stack with VSTI plugs running from MIDI
�It all worked well.
The processor meter in V-Stack showed about half the CPU use that my AMD3200
PC shows for the same plugin load.
The only thing that is a little squirrelly is the trackpad under XP, but
you would want a two-button mouse anyway and the mouse runs fine.
I loaded a demo of SawStudio running off a USB II external drive for audio.
The demo has a number of limitations, but it appears that it would run great,
with very low load. SawStudio would probably be a good choice for remote
work because it is so incredibly efficient.
I have just a few hours in at this point. Not long enough to make a blanket
recommendation, but so far Logic runs great under OSX and most things seem
to run well under XP as well.

An ExpressCard/34 with a second Firewire port would probably be the best
possible addition for this laptop. USBII comes up a little short for heavy
throughput. On my next trip I will have a very powerful studio in my backpack.

Thanks for the report Gene. Since I just bought a G4 Powerbook last fall, I
think I'll be waiting for whatever Apple comes up with for a pro level Intel
based tower. It's good to know things should work well should I decide to
run any Windows stuff!
