I'm pretty sure that I used to sync it to SMPTE as MTC back when I used my
analog machine (it's been years). It did really well, however, my old MCI
JH-16 wasn't super accurate, so I ended up having to drop a few frames out
of the SMPTE to compensate for tape speed fluctuations.

rock on,

Yes. The best way I found to do this was to use an old Opcode Studio 64 XTC
on my Paris machine (Win 9x only). I used to sync Paris to a smpte track
from an analog tape deck this way. I'm thinking that one of the MOTU sync
boxes or a Steiny Midex might work also.

Yeah, I use an opcode 2 port SE. I use it to sync to smpte on video tapes.
Only works in 98/ME

I used an Opcode 64x as well (win 9x). Not sure what's out there these
days - I'm sure there's some though.

Not if you have some magic way of converting SMPTE to MTC and getting
it into the computer without an interface... ;-)

What platform is that machine on?

The Opcode 2 port SE plugs into the printer port. I assume the opcode 64 does
as well. The 2 port has 2 midi ins, 2 midi outs, smpte in, and smpte out.
The 64 probably has a lot more.

Apparently Reaper (this new app I'm looking at) will sent SMPTE as MTC...now
it's just a matter of how does Paris read this time code...

Paris will need an interface that will read smpte.

The 64XTC uses the 9 pin serial port. I'm not sure, but it might be worth
trying a serial>USB adapter with this just to maximize the IRQ's available
to the DAW.

Paris will read MTC but not SMPTE, so if it is already converted, you should
have no problems

What would the settings on Paris be?

In your Project window you would select the (whatever) interface as Paris
midi in. Then in the control panel of the interface, you would configure the
interface to sync to incoming smpte. If it automatically converts smpte to
MTC, then Paris should lock to incoming smpte as it is converted to MTC by
the interface (at least I think this is what I remember from long ago).

Thanks for answering, Deej.
As I no longer have Paris that would have been a from memory thing, and at
56, that's not a thing i can do too easily.

MM (did)V.
I always used a USB Midiport to feed the output of my syncroniser to
Paris...always worked fine, (rock solid), with video sync.
