Hey Deej! You were just talking about the Tascam US-2400, you probably already
know this, there has been a price drop. Last time I checked prices they
wanted about $1100.00. Check it out.

Yikes!!!! That's cheap. Now I wonder if they're getting ready to discontinue
it.

Chris,

Let us know how you like this please. The only thing that's giving me second
thoughts is that it doesn't have an LCD display. That's been a very handy
feature on the Houston controller I'm using. Switching fader banks is a bit
of a PITA though in a big mix when I've got , multiple instruments that
require inverse fader moves and I've got them on different banks. If the
Tascam it worked reliably, I'd have no problem just laying scribble strips
long the fader row. Having a couple of 24 track banks sure would make life
faster and easier.

Is there a specific Cubase SX driver for the Tascam controller or does it
use HUI mode?

What is is about the Mackie controller that you don't like (other than
having only 8 faders)?

That was one of the deal breakers for me on the tascam firewire interface
that I owned for a week or two. I think that it is a much bigger deal though
if you are only using 8 faders and flipping around all the time. I almost
never go over 24 audio tracks in my projects. I figure that I will make
a default project (I'm using Cubase SL)with 24 tracks of audio and virtual
instruments from 25+. I suspect that I will work the same way I did when
I was doing analog or Paris, where most of my basic tracks will always be
in the same place. If I want to grab the lead vocal, it's always on track
16, etc. A flip of the bank button and I will be working on my midi/vsti
tracks. I think I can live without the LCD's this way. I'll probably end
up using some masking/drafting tape too.

>Is there a specific Cubase SX driver for the Tascam controller or does it

It works in Mackie universal controler mode, Hui mode, or general midi controller
mode. The latest update claims improve functionality for cubase/nuendo,
but I can't find more info about it. From what I can tell, the latest manual
has the info and that isn't the manual that they have on line. If you hold
the F5 key during boot on the unit, it puts it into a custom Cubase/Mackie
Control mode with keys and key combos customed mapped for that software.

>What is is about the Mackie controller that you don't like (other than
>having only 8 faders)?

I can't say that I have any complaints. In fact, there will be some tradeoffs
going for the 24 faders. The Mackie has the scribble strips. It has more
buttons that are readily availible and labled (without doing funky stuff
like remembering key combos (shift/F2, alt/stop etc). It also had a weighted
flywheel, which the tascam doesn't. If money weren't an option, I think
I'd be better off with the Mackie and two extenders. When I bought the Mackie,
the US2400 had just come out but was selling around $2000. It was worth
it to me to pay $2800 down the road for three Mackies over $2000 for the
Tascam.

Now the price is too good not to go for the US2400. Dang compromises....
;-)

I'll share my findings with the group when I get it going. I need to upgrade
to SL3 from SL1 though before I can put it through the paces. Multiple mackie
control (which is how this works) is only supported after SL/SX 2.2. I'll
order that tomorrow.

That's my only complaint with my FW-1884, but it is a bit of a pain.

I was actually looking at the new M-Audio controller/interface, which is sort
of a hybrid between the Mackie Control and the Tascam.. it doesn't have a
mixer mode though like the Tascam 1884, or as many midi i/o ports but it seems
pretty cool.

Cheers,

TC

Guys - FYI -

Looks like Tascam has addressed the scribble strip issue:

"New! SoftLCD displays 24 channels of data sent by your DAW app on your computer
monitor just like a giant hardware scribble strip."

Looks like a free download. Check it out!!!

Cheers,
Jon

I had trouble using that with the Tascam FW inerface. The lables weren't
in line with each channel, and the width of the lables didn't correspond
to the width of the channels. It would be sort of like mixing on an analog
console, but having the scribble tape on you meter bridge, and off the the
right. Better than nothing, but not as good as tape below each channel.
It also eats up desktop space. I suspect I won't even download this app.

Might as well try it, it may be improved.

I think the software was fine, it's more to do with my monitors. I'm using
two CRTs up on the meterbridge of an Argosy desk. So right of the bat, I
have to look up and away from the control unit and figure out what channel
on the screen is the one I have my finger on. There is a 4 inch gap between
my monitors that also makes it tough to get one's bearings. I suppose though
it couldn't hurt to try again. Being Tascam and not Sony, there probably
isn't any malware in the app. ;-) Thanks again or the heads-up James.

That's a little tempting for me to pair up with an M-Audio fader/knob box
for VSTi editing. That's so much of what I do and none of the control surfaces
seem to really do that terrible well. The Houston I had was OK but not much
better than that. Hmmmm . . . .
