Ok, I am producing some work right now that calls for something special.
My idead is getting a large group of people together for a background vocal
session. I am talking 15 or so.
Can someone explain to me the best way to set up speakers out of phase so
it cancels out the caranking basic track i want them to sing to? I think
I will need big cheepo home speakers to crank up loud and big..not an extra
pair of 6.5;s or whatever..how did they do this stuff?

Figure 8 pattern mics in a large fairly dead space. The speakers are
placed on either side of the mic in the dead zone, exactly the same
distance away from the mic. You can experiment with inverting the
polarity of one of the speakers as well. What I have also done is run
a pass of "just track" then flipped the phase on playback and blended
it with the track with the vocals on it. It is imperative that
NOTHING moves when doing this.... dynamics processing is also not an
option with this method.

A better solution, IMO, is to not use speakers, but to have
one person wear headphones & lead the rest... the lead person
acts as a conductor, marking the tempo, and sings/hums a
reference note a couple beats before they're supposed to come
in, and off you go.

I had a situation where I had to "stack" a 96 voice choir... I used
small PA boxes to direct the track at the choir and made sure the mics
were behind the speakers. I then phase inverted one pass to help
cancel some of the track leakage... worked great, and we didn't have
to buy 80 more headphones! :-)
