Sorry, I've been away. Got real busy with a bunch of stuff at work and the like, and I've been away from the newsgroup (which appears to have left on its own...) and finally found this forum with the help of Neil H.

So, you can blame him.

And yes, Rick, I will ship your card back to you in the next two weeks. Sorry about that, Bro. Things have been hectic here and I spaced.

I still have my Paris rigs, but haven't had the time to mess with them for a year or so except for tracking a houseconcert last month.

Now I'm getting the itch again, not only to finish mixing 7 years of concerts, but I have the opportunity to actually record a new song for a friend.

Here's where I need some advice.

At one of the last One Night Jam concerts, a friend debuted a new song. Haunting, gorgeous melody. And he played it very simply -- piano w/string pad, vox, and a bodhran.

When the concert was over, I was helping Michael pack up and I told him, "You know, when you go to record that song, *that* is the way to record it. Anything else will ruin it."

He agreed with me.

Two albums later, it's still not out there. I emailed him and asked him why.

He said, "Every time we went to record it, what you said came back to me. I tried to get three different producers to let me record it that way, but they refused. We tried it once their way with the band, and it just sounded wrong. So, it's never been released."

And that bugs me. The song is too damn good to sit on the shelf.

I saw him in concert a week or so ago, which reminded me about that song.

So, I emailed him a proposal that I bring my Paris rig to him, and we record it the way we want. I mix it, send it off for mastering, and then he can either put it on as a bonus track on a cd, or as a download. Whatever. I just want the song done.

My live mix is OK, but I've never liked the sound of his digital piano, and there are some rough spots. So, I want to use an acoustic piano, his keyboard for the string pad, the bodhran player, and since his new wife is a phenomenal violinist, either a low violin part or some cello. I'm checking around here to find someone with a grand or baby grand who'd be amenable to a day of recording. I want to keep the recording as "live" as possible, just more controlled. I'll add the "room" with EDS efx.

I've got a friend with a pretty decent mic locker, so I'm covered there.

My problem is with front end. I have either my Mackie VLZpro board or my Behr DDX3216 board. I would really like to use some niceer pres at least on the vox and the piano.

If I ever make any money from this, it won't be much. So, buying a set of 3 or 4 pres is not in my budget. I don't have any rental houses like that close to me, and again, there's the budget thing (my wife was on layoff all summer, so....toy money goes out the window.)

Anyone have some portable pres they'd be willing to lend or rent (for cheap) for a week? Current timeframe is Septemberish.
