I've not spent a TON of time at other newsgroups, but the ones I've visited
got nothin' on this one. The sense of comradship and goodwill at this NG
is, I'm gonna bet, pretty unusual. I'm saddened to see folks leaving,
perhaps to gather helpful information elsewhere. There have been times that
I've had questions regarding software and audio subjects other than Paris,
and while I've posted these questions at times, generally I'll try a product
related newsgroup instead. The bummer is that there probably someone here,
on this wonderful friendly patient group, that could have offered some help.
So far, and rightly, this has been primarily a Paris newsgroup, not Cubase,
Live, etc... I'm wondering if there is a way to re-focus the group to be
more inclusive? I know that we have broadened our focus in a sort of
organic way. Implicitly, this is a Paris Plus newsgroup, but would there be
any benefit to exploring this idea a little bit and perhaps being more
explicit about what we want to talk about here?
Now I'm gonna go blow my nose.

Great idea, besides I need all you guys around still as I am keeping Paris
for a while and will undoubtedly have questions. I have really been enjoying
the variety of discussion at GS.
We could do that sort of thing?

How about a digital audio, and/or DAW newsgroup so the remaining Paris
users donąt feel alienated and the outboard gear discussions are as on topic
as anything else (already are, but no sense in limiting what we already
discuss :-)?

I agree this NG far exceeds others in terms of community. There may be more
info on a specific DAW on itsą own NG, but those are seldom enjoyable
experiences (at least in my experience).

Regards,
Dedric

We could always just call it the
cheapbastardsthatrefusetoinvestinprotools newsgroup. :D

Because, basically, that's what it comes down to, innit? lol

I mean, at this point there is absolutely no reason other than
the cost to NOT use PTHD - it sounds just as good as anything
else out there (of course, that wasn't the case prior to the HD
series stuff).

I thought the same thing though, when Deej announced his "Crazy
Doug's Liquidation Blowout" sale... it was like: "Well, there
goes half the reasons to read the Paris NG anymore" lol

There's already a gearslutz, there's already a Prosoundweb, now
there's Mixerman's "womb"... I say leave this place be - it'll
evolve on it's own. It's still the only place to get Paris
help, a better place than the Swineberg forums to get Cubase
help, and if another person or two here buys a Pulsar card,
it'll probably end up being a better place than PlanetX to get
Pulsar tips, too lol.

Re: Maybe refocus this NG???Dedric,

Do you think that refocusing the group, etc. will invite the same bunch =
of wankers that hang on other groups to come here? Just a thought. I =
think one reason there is such a great community here is the commonality =
factor and I'm still able and willing to give Paris advice even though I =
don't use the system andy more. We pretty much discourage the troll =
community from hanging here primarily because the focus is on a DAW that =
is exclusive to this community.

Now I'm off to try to get my friend's Digi 002/Macbook studio I'm been =
working on up to speed. I should have sold him a Paris rig. All he does =
is audio. No midi, no VSTi's..........hmmm..........I may be hanging out =
on the FS site again soon.

My $0.02

When was the last time someone was sent away because they posted about something

.......but at Gearslutz, they don't have a separate forum for talking about
the virtues of bathroom overspray whilst peeing standing up vs lowering the
toilet seat and trying to hit the opposite wall by focusing the stream
between the bowl and the seat vs just going outside and havin' a good
satisfying whiz with you faithful hound. You can only get that
here......fair & balanced.

Ha...I'll try to actually type something this time.
To me, it's already OK for anyone here to talk pretty much about anything,
audio related or not. I think this group is special, and WAY better than
any other group I've taken part of.

LOL
Actually we do seem to have a magic formula here and that’s why I don’t see
any compelling reason to screw with it.

Mike,

Having read your post, and the others as of this time. I do see what you're
saying, however...

Firstly, not that I consider myself in charge here (someone's in charge?!?
;o), but I'd like to point out that as far as I am concerned people on this
newsgroup can discuss anything they like. I do prefer that we don't get overly
swamped in politics on the main group for long periods, but only because
multiple other users have stated concerns about this. Personally I think
discussing politics is critically important to society, and isn't done enough.
Arguably, if it was, the world would be a better place, though I seem to
now be discussing politics, so I'll shut up. ;o) Point is, I consider this
now to be a general purpose audio based (social?) group primarily for ex-Paris
users. Other discussions are welcome also. It's almost a social club really,
but like minded people obvious can help each other out.

I'm happy to change the group name or whatever if people think that will
help, though I do kinda consider DJ's point to be relevant. If we actually
"market" (not that I'd go marketing it) the group as a general audio group,
perhaps we'll start attracting crowds we don't want.

Basically, I think everyone knows and accepts now that the scope of this
group now is beyond Paris. There's simply not enough Paris users left to
keep it going on their own. And if people wish to bring new users along to
the group who will fit the mold, that's fine by me. I certainly wouldn't
be in favour of any general purpose spamming / advertising in other places
however, which may attract any random to come along. Word of mouth from users
who know what we're about is, I think, the way to go.

As I said, if people want the name of the main group changed, that's fine
by me, but ya know, I kinda feel like we're discussing the latest Quad processor
servers on a forum called the Commodore 64 users group. It's kinda cool like
that. It's our history. If we were to change the name I'd certainly want
Paris to stay in there somewhere.

My $0.02...

Cheers,
Kim.

Let's change the name to "We'll always have Paris". One day you'll realize
the problems of a small news group like ours don't amount to a hill of beans
in this world...

Hey Kim,
Thanks for your thoughtful reply, and all the others. I guess my thoughts
were motivated by two things: I feel a little guilty when I post stuff that
isn't really Paris related (though I know its very cool to do so... just
old-brain guilt I guess), also I hate to see folks leave. I guess Henry's
ciao kind of got to me!
Whatever the case, in the end, I was just wondering with no particular
outcome in mind. When on the net, this is such a great place to hang out,
thanks to YOU and all the other Paris-audio gals and gents.

Yep. I've made a lot of friends I've never met. And I'm not afraid
to post my attempts at engineering, knowing that I'll get useful
critiques and not blasted all to hell by self-righteous experts who
know everything better than everyone.

This is a warm, cozy place. I know I'd miss the hell out of it if it
went away, or turned into RAP.

I'm actually running Paris on a quad-6502 system, composed of 4 C=64's
clustered together, all overclocked to hell with liquid nitrogen
coolers and a 32-slot Magma chassis.. If I add 2 more, I can also run
Dr. T's and sync it all up. You think Deej's Frankencomp is
impressive? You should see the 8' rack of C=64's all
cross-connected....

;-P

Well put, Kim, and thanks for your benevolent hosting!

We don't have to change the name, just what the acronym stands for.

Let's see, how about

Responding
Intelligently
Sometimes
