I'm using two computers here running Steinberg systemlink (slave and master)
All of my audio files are on an SATA drive on my master comp. these
computers are networded using gigabit LAN on a two gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra
939 Mobos. Each of these mobos has a Marvell Gigabit Lan connecter 10/1000
and a NForce 10/100 LAN connector. both connectors on both mobos are routed
through a Gigabit switch.
OK, so I open up a project on the slave DAW, name it and then go to import
files. I navigate to the HD on the Master DAW and import the files from the
Audio folder on the master DAW to the project on the slave DAW. I do not
click the option to copy the files to the working directory of the project
on the slave DAW. when I hit OK, these files are imported to the slave
> project most ricky tick......I mean blazingly fast and the cool thing
> about
this is that they play back with hardly any VST overhead or throughput
issues over the network between the master and slave DAW.
I haven't yet tried to record audio from the slave DAW to the HD on the
master DAW, but if it works, this basically means I can record to and store
all my audio files on a couple of monster SATA drives on the master DAW and
using Systemlink, just record to AD's on any computer I choose with the
target audio directory being on the Master DAW.Samples can be streamed from
VSTi's and sample drives running on each individual master/slave DAW.
I could even add another computer with another RME card and have three (or
more) systems sharing the tracking and mixing while sharing the overhead.
I've still got to see if the cascading of HDSP cards on all of these DAWS
to
sum to the Master DAW is going to work, but if it does, I think the days of
my jonesin' for some super computer are all over. I'll be able to work at
extremely low latency with a single audio drive streaming to the projects
on
other computers running Gigabyte LAN.
I'm am extremely stoked about this. I'll have the final piece of the puzzle
(a piece of hadware I need) by the end of next week. I've got some
inquiries
out to the RME formum about daisy chaining the HDSP cards via S/PDIF.
This could become a monster that abslutely dwarfs my Paris Frankencomp
(MUHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!)
Stay tuned.
