Hi Chris,
I know Windows 32 can only by default use up to 2G, but I'm running the /3G
switch to
let the apps access more. Is that what you are referring to, or is there a
board
dependancy with this one that will limit me otherwise?
So as long as I just setup a raid with the silicon image controller I should
be fine?
I'm thinking of going raid for the samples drive.
Thanks!
Dedric

4GB with a 32 bit OS is like the speed limit. No way to get around it. The
various switches really just allow apps to move around the 2GB (tops) of
physical memory they use.

We've done the benchmarks on (fairly) big iron. It makes a real difference
running a 64 bit OS with large amounts of memory.

With 3 UAD cards in the machine my motherboard will only report 2 gigs
to windows whether or not I have the 3 gig switch or not. Also any of
the BIOS settings that effect that memory hole don't seem to to effect
it. With just the 2 in it may act differently for you.

I'm using a IDE OS and DVD drive
2x sata in raid 0 for samples on the Intel controller
1 drive on intel in removable
2x sata internal on silicon image.
Seems to work fine.

this is the best up to date info on the 3/gb deal.

Ouch. That could be a problem then. Hopefully that's related to 3 UAD-1s,
and not just UAD-1s, or using all three PCI slots.
I'll have to be sure I have a return policy for that board first.
Thanks,

Interesting. Regardless of the actual function of the /3G switch, it makes
a significant difference
with Nuendo and loading sample libraries, even with only 2G of ram, so I
guess that just implies
libraries need more of the user virtual address space, or there isn't as
much of it available for
secondary apps to access normally.
Before adding the switch, Nuendo would at times toss up memory errors when
approaching 1.6G used, and would
at least come to a standstill. But after setting it (with userva=2770 I
believe - for UAD-1s) I can load down memory at will,
though I watch it carefully to be sure I'm not killing Windows n the
process. I've actually had Nuendo run with less than 100M
of free Ram, inadvertantly. It runs fine with a bit over 200M free. With
sample libraries, that last bit can make a significant
difference.
Regards,
Dedric
