DCYes, this weekend I finally made it down to the store. After losing a day
to a hangover on Saturday, on Saunday I made the concerted effort to make
it down to the store. I still have a hdd upgrade planned, but stage 1 of
the upgrade was the Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939 MB, an Athlon 64 3000+ and a
gig of ram.
Of course, in my haste to get running I had no interest in reinstalling Windows,
but quickly found that Windows XP isn't all that forgiving if you suddenly
replace a whole bucketload of it's hardware. Suffice to say a quick "repair"
of XP brought the system back up, and it's all good.
Mind you I haven't actually run Paris on the thing yet. I'll get to that
tonight. Point is though that the EDS cards fitted in just fine. From what
I can tell I could actually put a full 5 EDS cards in this thing if I wanted.
The BIOS is really nice with IRQs, and allows you to assign each PCI slot
to whatever IRQ you want, and tells you what you'll be sharing with on each
setting. PCI 1 & 5 share IRQs qith each other, but no other slots share far
as I know, so it should be possible to simply put every EDS card on a single
IRQ which isn't shared with anything else.
The only complaint I have about this board is that it doesn't seem to have
an SPDIF In provided. Even though it is supposed to be on the board, the
supplied connector which connects to the mobo header only has outputs. The
good news is though that it has both coaxial and optical outputs. The only
other complaint is that, as I imagine is often the case, the board has too
much I/O for them to fit it all on the mobo, so there are of course two of
those metal strips that lose you a PCI slot, and these allow you access to
the "rest" of your audio plugs (including SPDIF) and in the other case the
Firewire and some bonus USB2 connectors. At this stage I've only got 2 EDS
cards anyhow so this isn't a problem, but if I wanted to use 5 PCI slots,
SPDIF and Firewire all at once I'd have to find a workaround. This isn't
an issue for me though.
I bought a cheapy "winfast" Geforce 5200FX graphics card also for good measure.
This thing was nice and cheap, and I figure being a Geforce card it should
play nice with the NForce mobo chipset.
Tonight I'll get my other boot working, and see if we can't get Paris to
run.
I'm looking forward to getting my planned 2 x 250Gig Sata drives for the
thing. That should speed it up a whole chunk more I expect. Currently the
OS on this new box is living on an old 27 Gig 5200RPM Maxtor drive I bought
"Back in the day" while I was over in the U.S. in 98 or whenever it was.
I imagine it's a little slower than current technology. ;o)

Kim.My Cubase DAW is running at 333MHz (2 x gigs of PC 2700 DDR) using an AMD XP
3000 CPU. It is plugging along at between 60-75% CPU usage when playing back
48 tracks of audio with little else going on other than plugins from my 3 x
UAD-1 cards. I'm not fmiliar enough with SX to knowif this is about normal
or not and I'm sure I could optomize the system a little more by turning off
the LAN in the bios when I'm mixing since one of my RME's is sharing an IRQ
with it, but anyway, the system seems very stable and definitely usable as a
mixdown platform. I would however, like to squeeze a little more CPU
headroom out of it and I'm wondering if anyone here has ever substituted an
XP 3200 CPU for an XP 3000 and noticed that the gain in cycles was
substantial enough to justify the expenditure (as subjective as that is).
Anyway, it's a longshot, but I thought I'd ask.
