Went to CompUSA last night, they didn't have the white MacBook so I had to
get the $1499 black one. Spec'd a core duo Dell 640m to as close as I could
get it. $944 for the same CPU, twice as much RAM (though still 2x512 and
not a single 1gb stick), one inch larger screen. Ran the updates on OS X.FurryCritter
and there was a 300MB(!!!) OS patch waiting. Are they recompiling everything
from (new) source? Wow.

You paid extra for black. I guess some people think it's worth it but I
would go with white. About $500 less here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000EPJNHW/weeno/103- 7748545-1896629?%5Fencoding=UTF8&camp=1789&link%5Fco de=xm2

That's a big update alright. On the bright side, Apple has been
consistent with regular free updates during each dev cycle and OSX is
better for it.

Cheers,

The black one has 2.0 Ghz dual cores and a 20 gb larger hard drive. Bumping
the Dell to 2.0 was over $200 of the upgrade price so the Dell actually does
better in terms of bang for buck vs. the $1299 model.

I'm all for patches, but what kind of patch takes 300MB? Service Pack 2,
the most bloated piece of M$oft crap ever wasn't even that big.

That Black MacBook looks nice, but I think it is ridiculous that Apple is
charging $200.00 more for a color! I agree with you guys about Apple's prices.
I hope it gets better over time.

Jamie, there's no superDrive on that one.

The Macbook has things the Dell doesn't have, the Dell has things the
Macbook doesn't have. It sounds like you'd be more comfortable buying
the Dell. You must be a good friend to suck it up and buy what your
friend wants instead of what you want... :^)

Too bad the CompUSA you walked into had such little choice. You could
have spent less on a Macbook by going to another store with more stock,
by going online like you'd do with the Dell or by following some of the
other advice in this thread.

Damn Apple for providing such a significant update (probably a combined
update from several rounds completed since that laptop shipped). Those
scurvy bastards!

Cheers,

Was the 300MB just for OSX, or was it the OS plus iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie,
Garage Band, Mail, Safari, etc., etc.? When Software Update runs on a Mac,
it looks for updates to all the bundled software. I have my Macs set up to
check for updates once a day, and have never had a single OS update alone
run over 20MB or so, as far as I can recall. Now, if the software was a
couple of updates old, and included all the bundled stuff, I can see how it
may have been pretty big. Subsequent updates should be much more reasonable
in size.

OS X only, the others (all 11 of them) were between 5 and 60 MB.

That's the best bang/buck MacBook at the moment I think. But yes, if you
need a superdrive you'd have to go with a superdrive model.

Still you can get a better deal on any of the models by looking around a
bit: Amazon's rebate, the free extra RAM/peripheral deals, refurb,
developer/edu deals if appropriate or sales - some of the ideas we both
suggested earlier.

Cheers,

I agree about the black model surcharge. I wouldn't pay it. MacBook
prices are better for the white ones. I think the white looks better, too.

Just call it "MacBook Pro".

Wow! The software on that MacBook must have been several updates old. Even
at that it seems too huge. I have no explanation. At any rate, future
updates should be much smaller. Geez, I would hope anyway! :>)

More like "MacBook Fashion Accessory Version." Apple marketing likes to
play with colors. That's been a big thing for the iPod, for example.

BTW, I'm not sure the actual MacBook Pro is worth the extra over the
MacBook basic white for audio uses. Granted the MBP models do have an
expansion slot, better graphics and larger screen options, and are
incrementally faster last I looked. But I'll wait and see what's up with
the next round...I don't need another laptop until the 64 bit models
comes out. I'd also be interested in an integrated flash drive for fast
booting and a Blueray drive for archiving and HDTV use - probably MBP
features when they first appear.

Cheers,
-Jamie
