I wanted to set up a fresh thread for guys like Gantt and Ted who are
talking about making the PC plunge so they could get maximum visibility
and input on this.

Disclaimer: this isn't Mac vs PC advocacy. I should be clear about this
once again - I'm a PARIS Mac user from way back myself, and my main
work/production computer, the one I'm typing this on right now, is a
dual G5. This is to help folks who are interested in making that
transition in 2008/2009 to compile the info they'll need to guide them
in that transition.

Hi Guys,

I can share my experience a bit. First of all, my objective was to keep
things bone simple, and use the pc only for paris (I've got 2 mac pro's
that will be integrated with it, so I didn't need anything fancy).

My other thought was to go single core Athlon, also to keep things
simple. I ended up going on ebay and grabbing a bare bones system
consisting of atx case, mobo and cpu, with 1gb of ram.

Specs were:

CPU AMD Athlon 64 LE-1640 AM2 (2.7GHz) 45W 2000MHz FSB
CPU Cooler AMD Athlon™ 64 Original Stock Fan & Heatsink
Memory 1 Kingston DDR2 PC2-6400 1GB/800MHz
Motherboard BIOSTAR MCP6P-M2 (NVIDIA GF6150,SATAII,RAID,DDR2-800)
Video NVIDIA GeForce 6150 GPU Memory Share Up to 512MB
Audio Onboard High Definition Audio
Network Card Onboard Network Card
Case G-Power Stylish Deluxe Black Case (9021)
Power Supply 450W ATX Power Supply

These were all brand new parts. Cost was $144.00. Now, this system only
has 2 pci slots and one pcie, so I am using a pcie-pci expansion chassis
with 4 eds cards (virtuavia).

I added my own hard drives that were kicking around, and a (new) dual
pci video card also from ebay for around $60 (there's onboard vga, but
that only powers one display).

I just temporarily borrowed the cd rom drive from my mac to install
windows xp. I installed the stripped down version of XP, but I have an
xp pro license here as well for it (I always like to do things legit as
everyone deserves to make a living from their hard work).

That's it. very inexpensive, brand new parts and runs great so far. Very
easy to get up and running with paris, and far beyond the systems I've
used with Paris in the past. In my opinion, keep it for paris only and
keep it dirt simple.

If you need something to run cubase and paris etc, and need anything
beyond the basics, then get someone like Chris L to build it for you and
save the headaches.

Cheers,

TC
