I think it depends on the use and the model. We had a Dell for video
editing at a previous job - tried to add a new video card to get a dual
display and it caused nothing but headaches, but I attributed that to a
cheap motherboard more than anything (everything in this model was cheap/not
industry standard).
I built a custom system for them and it ran great.
If you are mixing RME cards (or others even) and UAD-1s (then add firewire
audio perhaps), I wouldn't go off the shelf and expect great results -
motherboards are too fickle (e.g. you could get stuck with an chipset that
isn't going to work or a slow PCI buss, unless you go PCI-E, then it could
be a toss up until you test it in practice). Otherwise, TI firewire, DDR2,
SATA, etc should be fine, unless you go SATA raid.... (may work fine in
typical data storage, but with audio chipsets can be problematic if you run
really high track counts).

How long ago was this? I used to shy away from some 'commodity' manufacturers
but when I look under the hood these days it looks like they're using nearly
identical core chipsets to the ASUS and Chaintechs of the world. The differences
are in extras, gigabit networking, Promise SATA controllers, stuff like that.
Maybe I'll test the theory. My old audio machine (an old Athlon box) is in
bad shape. I was going to hold out for a fancy quad core but maybe I'll snap
up one of these Dells and see if I can make into an audio box.
Anybody want to bet against me?

I don't want to bet against you. In fact, if it works out great,
I'd probably copy you.
I've been trying to figure out what to get for a new PC, and I
find the whole thing very much a drag (if I were richer, I
suppose I would get some overpriced pre-configured audio
computer).
Pro Tools has computer recommendations, and some Dell worksations are listed,
which end up being around $3500!
How many PCI slots are there? I was thinking I would want to use
the new computer for Paris as well as a native firewire setup,
but now I'm thinking to screw that. So I'd really only need
a slot for a UAD card I guess.
Can you add 1 or 2 extra hard drives?

Room for an extra drive, or to replace the current one. 750 GB drives are
an option now, and a RAID 5 NAS unit is probably a better idea then keeping
everything locally anyway. The machine in question has two PCI slots and
one PCI-E.
I'm 99% sure I'm going to do this, I'll keep people here posted.

I googled "RAID 5 NAS"...still not sure what it is. I found
some things that looked to be well over a $1000 (thatsa no good), or other
build it yourself things (thatsa not so good either).
I suppose 2 drives could be alright, although I'm using 3 now.
One for the OS, one for audio, and one for sounds (Giga sounds,
etc., plus I usually throw backups of songs on the 3rd drive).

Wow, that looks pretty good. Twice the ram. Plus, with a CRT
monitor. The Dell has a flat panel, but I don't think I care about
that. The Dell's drive is smaller but 7200, the HP is 5400, but
that's the OS, so does that matter? The HP has no floppy drive.
I guess no one uses those, but I think I need one occasionally.
Still, if you match up the Dell Ram-wise, etc., I think that is
now somewhere near $700, and the HP is just ovr $500 (after
rebates!).

It was about 2-3 years ago, which in reality is an eternity in the tech
world, so hardly a strong case against Dell - just one experience in
general. I've seen some Dells on the other native DAW forums (Nuendo,
Samplitude at least), so they work fine for a lot of people. This was also
a system they had been using, not bought with video in mind - just bought
based on price alone.
Why not hold out 5 years - Intel is promising 80 cores by then. 80... That
should run a boatload of convolution reverbs at 24/192k.

Definitely not a bad machine, but the Dell lets me a) drop the display and
b) add a cheap video card. The nVidia 6150 LE chipset shares main memory
which is usually a no-no for any real time work. I have a Dell spec'd out
for around $500 that looks pretty damn good. I just haven't pulled the trigger
on it quite yet.
