Hey all,
My boss's kid spilled something into his Mac. I had put an XP partition on
it for him to play games. That boots fine, the OS X partition does not. It
looks to me like a boot loader issue, because I can select the OS X partition
as the boot device but it chunks and then boots into XP anyway. I'd like
to mount the OS X partition to back up data before sending it to Apple to
get worked on. Can I mount that partition in XP? If so, how?

Somewhere there exists MSWindows software that can read a mac disk.
Don't know the name off hand but if you search you'll find it. Buy it,
install it and see if you can read the OSX partition from XP.
But first I'd try booting off of the OSX system CD and see if you can
see the internal OSX partition. If so you may be able to copy files off
of it directly.
Or get Disk Warrior, boot OSX off of its CD and use the included tools
to rescue the OSX partition and back it up to an external drive.
Or take it to an Apple store genius bar along with your external drive,
ask nicely and they'll run Disk Warrior and do the backup for you.

Sadly, the optical drive is hosed as well. Already tried that.
Why can't the just write a freaking driver for the file system?

No problem, here's another nifty alternative:
Connect the hosed mac (H) to a good mac (G) via firewire.
Start G if it's not already running. Then start H while holding down the
T key. This will put it into firewire target disk mode and the drives on
H will appear on the desktop of G.
Copy your data, run Disk Warrior, whatever you need.

Another fine idea to be sure, but this assumes I have a 'good Mac' which naturally
I don't. But thanks for trying, I bought the Mac Drive software and it seems
to be working now.
