Danny,
Your Paris rig is going to be more flexible on windows ME than any other OS.
This is due to limitations regarding the XP driver and Paris ADAT modules.
If you can live with one ADAT module per MEC, XP will give you lots more VST
plugin options and the ability to utilize more RAM. There is really no other
reason to use XP other than this, IMO, so there's the tradeoff....hardware
flexibility vs the ability to run current plugins and RAM.
I moved away from Paris about this time last year. The mobo/CPU I was using
was the most stable I had ever found for a Paris rig. It was an ASUS A7V8X
with an XP 2800 CPU. A dinosaur by today's standards. I have heard good
reports on the Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra 939 mobo. It's out of production now
and very hard to find. If you do find one, I would recommend using the most
powerful single core socket 939 CPU there is. I believe you can use dual
core CPU's on a Paris machine now with some kind of hack, but I see not
purpose in this since the hack involves disabling one of the cores.
I hope this gives you a little perspective. Others here will surely have
more current solutions for you, if there are any. From a stability
standpoint, the ASUS A7V8X was great and the XP 2800 CPU was plenty powerful
to push a Paris rig. I was running a colorgraphics Xentera quad head AGP
video card with the ASUS board. This is mighty handy with Paris and they are
cheap. I did try mine with my Gigabyte GA-K8NS 939 mobo and it wouldn't
work, but it did work great with the older ASUS product.
As far as using your older rig for a VSTi host, just make sure you've got a
good ASIO soundcard (RME HDSP series is highly recommend here), 2G of RAM
and a powerful enough CPU to operate at the lowest possible latency
settings.
Regards,
Deej
