Noticed this today in the new Sweetwater catalog... looks like
a pretty good deal, appears to have internal summing to a
stereo output (see back panel pic) would be GREAT for something
like several toms you don't want to print to a separate track
for each mic...

That does look nice but how good are the Pres. I like the quote that he tested
it for 2 weeks and didn't have one problem. WOW !!!!! Maybe it has a
3 week warranty. kidding

I got 2 presonus digimax fs and they are only 8 each but it's worth looking
at too.

LOL! True - maybe the reviewer is used to stuff breaking right
out of the box. I dunno how good the pres are - I've never
really heard anyone slamming MOTU stuff, though, so I
think it's probably safe to assume their stuff isn't crap.

Just throwing it out there for ya - looks like a handy product
for anyone who doesn't have a mixer & wants to run a bunch of
toms to two track or perhaps a multi-keyboard rig to two
channels for live use, since it has line-in's as well (this is
assuming the mixing can be done without any software that might
be accessible via the FW connection).

Just to be clear though the 16 ins are through firewire and NOT through the
8 ins in the back. Right ?

I have no idea - you'd probably have to call your favorite MOTU
dealer & inquire.

(although I don't see how you could get 16 total in's with only
8 physical inputs)

The deluxe version of this would be the API 3124 with the mixer built in.
I had one and it was a great sounding piece. Obvioulsy not in the same
world price-wise.

Lightpipe! 8 mic, line, instrument inputs, 8 lightpipe inputs, 8 lightpipe
outputs, stereo line outputs plus headphone out. It also acts as an 8 analog
input to 8 lightpipe output converter. It looks like an 828MkII sans the
SPDIF plus six more mic pre's. The pre's on my 828MkII are all around
decent, clean, flat pre's. Not stellar by any means, but not crap either.
Here's more detailed info if anyone's interested.

It's also got two sets of lightpipe for up to 8 channels at 96KHz. That's
kind of cool.

Well, like I said, the pre's on my 828MkII are decent. They're not Gracie,
True Systems or Great River clean, but they're not junk either. Currently, I
use them for my drum overheads, percussion, acoustic guitar, etc. I don't
have a large collection of pre's and the others I have are all more
"coloring". Assuming the pre's in this unit are at least equal or better,
I'd say they be fine for a general, neutral sound. I have heard that MOTU
was using some marketing hype and might be padding their gain specs, so you
might want to investigate that if you want to use this pre with ribbon or
other low output mics. I've never had any gain problems with my 828, but I'm
only using the standard dynamic and condenser mics.

The preamps on my MOTU 828MII seem clean and reasonably transparent.
Also, the box has been very dependable and MOTU's driver updates for my
system (MacOSX) have been timely. Recommended.

Cheers,

Here are some competing products you guys should look at. The question is
can these products be used in stand alone mode as a mic pre amp. There was
some talk about the Focusrite being able to be used in stand alone mode.
The Alesis is the least expensive and also gives you a turntable in put
with a ground. All of these products have 8 mic pres and 16 Adat light pipe
I/Os, the MOTU only has 8. By the way, they are all using the same TC chip
set for the firewire. I expect TC electronic to come out with their own
26 I/O box, maybe at the NAMM show.

HI James,
The focusrite sounds pretty darn good. Sadly the Presonus sounds
so-so.The headphone out on the Presonus sounds awful. Not sure if I
would trust anything from the curretn Aleisis. I haven't had any
customers have good luck with any of their compter recording stuff so far.
The Presonus has some MOTU/RME style routing but it is so limited that I
don't think they should have bothered. The Focusrite doesn't have any
routing.
The Focusrite will actully buss power (don't know how they managed that).

Chris,

Have you heard the TC Konnekt 24D? I'm curious about how you can't route
anything on the Focusrite unit -- does it have a mixer/submixer control panel
at all? And what about the M-Audio Light Bridge? Does it have routing like
the RME Digiface?

Thanks,

Graham

Wow...what a coincedence you guys are talking about this.
I am trying to work a trade with Morgan on one right now.
I saw the ad for the 8pre on MIX Magazine.
Looks great for my needs.
The 8 ADAT lightpipe outs should interface
with the PARIS ADAT card correct?
I am just looking for more mic pres for drumset micing, etc..
