I just picked up a pair of RS1's off ebay and can only say WOW!

As for bleed, there is some but less than I expected...as for using them
with a vocalist it would depend on how loud they like their headphones
although I don't think I'd let anyone use them except me.

I'll do a little experiment and get back to you

Hey DC

My initial hunt for headphones included the Grado SR 325, Sennheiser HD650
the AKG K701 (a friend had a pair I checked out) and the Beyer 770's (I
think) and a pair of Sony something or other (sorry can't remember)

Now while I was auditioning the Grados I asked to hear the RS-1's, what a
huge difference, like night and day compared to the SR 325's...and the 325s
were nothing to sneeze at either. So I reluctantly handed the RS-1s back to
the saleman and said to myself "If I can in anyway afford a pair I'm buying
them" ....Remember in Canada the RS-1s list for a $999 or so and that was
just too much for my pocketbook so I resigned myself to the fact that the
RS-1's would not be in my immediate future and I continued the hunt of more
affordable headphones.

Now don't get me wrong the above mentioned headphones were all excellent
head phones (with slight differences between them) and after all my
listening tests were done I decided the HD 650's were the headphones for me
based on price / sound quality (to my ears) and overall value...

So I started looking on EBay and one evening about midnight I saw an auction
for a pair of mint condition RS-1's (staring bid at $400 USD or $460 CDN)
and I jokingly put a bid on them knowing full well the bid was too low and
as the auction was ending in a half hour a bidding war would soon
begin...guess what, the bidding war did not materialise and I won the
headphones.

When they arrived I put them on and checked out a few CD's and all I can say
is WOW! clarity of mids, sweet highs and a solid low end.

Now as for using them in mixdown...let's just say they clean up the
soundscape just enough to really nail L/R placement as well as front to back
information that due to limitations in my mixing room are slightly
smeared...in other words they are my reference point for 3-D positioning
only.

I know that's more than you asked for but what the hell it was fun writing
it.

Actually the SR325's and the Sennheisers are nothing to sneeze at, it's just
the RS1's take it to a whole new level of clarity that I as a music listener
have never experieced before.

I'm still in the honeymoon phase so I'm sure once the novelty wears off I
will be much more critical of them

Perhaps not. George Massenburg cites them as the best phones in the world
for allowing one to hear detail in the mix.

George Massenburg says "you can hear the grass grow" in the Grados. I have
some of the less expensive 250's and love them...
