Hi computer people. I have a Toshiba laptop that has been
hard crashing as if the C drive connection is bad. I just replaced
it last week. I don't think it's the drive. Sometimes it helps
to remove power and the battery to enable the drive to reappear
even in the BIOS. I have a huge weekend of gigs revolving around
this computer.

Using Acronis I have a hidden directory on the suspect C drive
with a complete recovery. I also have a complete clone on a USB
drive.

What do you think I should do? I have to have it running tomorrow
by 12:00 in the afternoon! Gigs in 3 states.

Thanks for any help!
Tom

I also checked RAM, heat, unplugged/replugged the C drive in and out.
No mouse or other drives installed and it still crashed to BSOD for a =
split second
then nothing. That's why I think it's the drive or drive connection.
Worst case mobo.

HI Tom,
Is the model still being made? If so you might want to see if a local
best buy, compusa, etc have one in stock. buy it swap the hard drive out
and use it for the gigs then put the drive back in and return . If it
old then well you might be screwed if you need it that quick. Will any
laptop be able to do it?
Can you lug a desktop with you instead?

Chris

Thanks Chris,
I'm running PCDJ.
It's older with the 17" screen. It has a fairly standard drive I think.
It's a Toshiba. I know that. I just bought the new drive so
I'm thinking strongly that it's the mobo.

I am trying to get it to boot from USB. Can I do that?

Chris,
Satellite P4 2.4 USB 2 I think? Originally it had a 40GIG C.
I cloned from Acronis to a 60GIG and it worked perfectly for
2 days. Now it's shutting down or not booting. Acronis
says there's no drive. I remove all power reset and then
the drive will show up but Acronis isn't running! It's one or
the other but not both. I'm thinking the best bet would be the
USB drive that has a working C copy. Can I boot from that
on a laptop? I think I had that working way back when I
made the clone.
Tom

Chris,
How can I change the drive letter to C without completely
screwing up another computer in Disk Management?
This one won't let me go below E. I'm guessing all=20
others will be the same.

Chris,
Satellite P4 2.4 USB 2 I think? Originally it had a 40GIG C.
I cloned from Acronis to a 60GIG and it worked perfectly for
2 days. Now it's shutting down or not booting. Acronis
says there's no drive. I remove all power reset and then
the drive will show up but Acronis isn't running! It's one or
the other but not both. I'm thinking the best bet would be the
USB drive that has a working C copy. Can I boot from that
on a laptop? I think I had that working way back when I
made the clone.

Thanks Chris,
I'm running PCDJ.
It's older with the 17" screen. It has a fairly standard drive I =
think.
It's a Toshiba. I know that. I just bought the new drive so
I'm thinking strongly that it's the mobo.

I am trying to get it to boot from USB. Can I do that?

HI Tom,

Tom,

Sounds like either a mobo issue or the wrong HAL/kernel. The start then split
second blue screen then reset can be a hal problem.

For now I'd borrow a machine for the weekend and set up your software on
it. It will be tough having confidence in the setup if it's this bad now.

Thad,
Exactly. I am burning all the crucial DJ tunes to spin traditionally.
Thanks for the help. I'll be scrambling tomorrow in the AM for a
comp before I run to the gig.

Sheesh.

Good luck, Tom. Not crucial now, but here are the files you need for ACPI
BIOS machines (i.e. everything).

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC
- halacpi.dll (renamed to hal.dll)
- ntkrnlpa.exe
- ntoskrnl.exe

ACPI Uniprocessor PC
- halaacpi.dll (renamed to hal.dll)
- ntkrnlpa.exe
- ntoskrnl.exe

ACPI Multiprocessor PC
- halmacpi.dll (renamed to hal.dll)
- ntkrpamp.exe (renamed to ntkrnlpa.exe)
- ntkrnlmp.exe (renamed to ntoskrnl.exe)¨

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

When you're back, and rested, and done with your weekend heart attack I'd
like to ask you a few questions about the DJ software you use. I've been
playing with DJ Deckc (www.djdecks.be) with time code vinyl, but the new
Traktor rig looks interesting. Especially since I wrote the Traktor 2 manual
so I know it pretty well. I'd really like opinions from people more experiences
with the software out there.

Good luck,

TCB

if I was you I'd go back to the old C drive that you know worked and =
take the newer 60 GB drive and put it in a USB case so you can get at =
your material. Troubleshoot it this way, but I'm guessing acronis put in =
a bad/unstable image on that 60 GB.

Chris,
Satellite P4 2.4 USB 2 I think? Originally it had a 40GIG C.
I cloned from Acronis to a 60GIG and it worked perfectly for
2 days. Now it's shutting down or not booting. Acronis
says there's no drive. I remove all power reset and then
the drive will show up but Acronis isn't running! It's one or
the other but not both. I'm thinking the best bet would be the
USB drive that has a working C copy. Can I boot from that
on a laptop? I think I had that working way back when I
made the clone.

Thanks Chris,
I'm running PCDJ.
It's older with the 17" screen. It has a fairly standard drive I =
think.
It's a Toshiba. I know that. I just bought the new drive so
I'm thinking strongly that it's the mobo.

I am trying to get it to boot from USB. Can I do that?

HI Tom,
Is the model still being made? If so you might want to see if a =
local=20
best buy, compusa, etc have one in stock. buy it swap the hard =
drive out=20
and use it for the gigs then put the drive back in and return . If =
it=20
old then well you might be screwed if you need it that quick. Will =
any=20
laptop be able to do it?
Can you lug a desktop with you instead?

Aaron,
This was a backup from two months ago with no problems.
I'm fairly convinced it is a mobo problem. I just bought
an Acer and the tech said he could restore from my
60Gig to the new Acer C drive. All audio is on external
drives that are working fine.

I hope this works. I have to leave in a couple of hours!
I made some backup CDs to pull me through but
it's gonna be ugly for me.

2 hours sleep.
Tom

Hi Tom,
Yes it does sound like either motherboard or power supply to me.
If the chipsets between the Acer and yours are close enough then he will
probably be able to pull off the restore.

Good Luck..
Chris

Chris,
That's exactly what he said and did. You guys are smart!
It worked like a charm today although I had to uninstall/reinstall
PCDJ. =20

Guess what? I called and emailed tech support and within 15 minutes
the phone rang. 15 minutes later PCDJ was all set with codes.
I don't remember the last time I got that kind of service.

This little Acer Core 2 Duo 1.6 is kicking the Toshiba's 2.4 P4's butt.
The Toshiba has become the backup if I ever get it working again.
Tom
