I hadda a '78 Nova with a 262-V8 in it... I tried to kill it, seriously I
did. I used to ram the RPM's up to about 7~8 thousand and try to launch some
pistons. Worst I could do was float all the lifters in it. Couldn't kill it
man..... So, I promptly yanked, spanked and replaced with a 400HP 350 with a
modified Turbo 350 tranny... barking tires hitting 2nd at any speed was not
optional :)
I could launch the tires hitting 2nd gear if I wanted to, LOL... Any chance
you'll be wasting your life at the gas pump like I did?

So far I've only filled her once, and have used around half what I put in.
Seeing I haven't had to refill I can't be sure of any quirks in the guage
etc... (for example, on full it reads only about 7/8 full) so I'm not sure
what milage I'm getting yet. I am suspicious it's using a bit though. ;o)
I've been about 100 miles and used about half a tank (and the tank cost $80!).
Fortunately I'll be taking public transport to work at the new job, so the
car is just for weekends.
But it doesn't have a monster engine. The 253 (4.2 litre) V8 is a great engine
though, and they can be made to go pretty quick if you want. This one has
already been rebuilt just 24,000 miles ago, with hardened heads suitable
for unleaded, new pistons etc, so I'm thinking I'll just cruise around and
leave it as is. These engines can go for 300,000+ miles, so if I treat it
nice, she'll last me two decades...
If fuel costs get the better of me I can convert it to LPG. LPG here is roughly
1/3 the price of normal fuel... (LPG is about $1.70 Australian a gallon
- normal unleaded fuel is over $5 a gallon).
The main thing is that it makes the right burble sound as it drives down
the road. ;o)
Cheers,
Kim.

Rock on man.. I remember my old 262 sounded pretty good, it just didn't get
me the insane umpph I wanted as a heavy footed 16 year old. These days that
would be getting 'real' expensive though as petro is no longer 65 cents a
gallon.
Ahh.. the good old days when you could run dead dinosaurs through your
motor, and in a pinch, some Everclear.

My first car was actually this same model. It was only ten years old when
I bought it though. ;o) And the last one was a 202c.i. 6 cylinder... nowhere
near powerful enough... some 20 seconds 0-60 m/h... and a 3 speed manual!
Yep, three whole manual gears!! ;o) Rip through first (which took you to
about 15m/h on the original engine if you were lucky), then into second,
which took you to about 40 mile. If you were at 60 miles and needed to accelerate
you just had to press harder with your foot and wait for the little 202 to
wind up.
The last one was a "Kingswood" also, not a "Premier" like this new one. Premier
being the more expensive luxury model with A/C, a clock, and usually cloth
seats etc... as opposed to my poor old vinyl seats in the Kingswood which
were quickly covered all round in sheepskin.
I spent about 10 years in that car wishing I had a V8... now FINALLY...
;o)
Just had a look and the carby on this is awefully small... hmm... ;o)
Cheers,
Kim.

Hmm...pimp your ride...
Y'know, it would only take a few hundred dollars to turn your car into
this:

pop a duel quad or a six pack on it and watch the fuel gauge move as
fast as the speedo...in opposite directions of course.

It's got a little baby two barrel stromberg WW carby on it at the moment...
an upgrade may be in the wings. My infamous brother has a Holly 4 barrel
sitting somewhere doing nothing, which would make it go, though I may wait
until I get the LPG conversion so the fuel price is not so high... ;o)

Holley used to make a series called the economaster that worked well.... you
might check into that. Gotta be careful about what size carb you stuff on
there, you could choke out that little v8 pretty easy I'd bet. The other
thing I found about Holley carbs.... if you backfire, put in a new valve
(located under the bowl) because 9 times out of 10 you will have just blown
it to shreds.

Get yourself a Carter AFB... one of the best basic carbs around.

hehehe... Yup! :-)
2 Challengers (70/72), 1 Cuda (71) and 2 Chargers (69/72)... over the
course of about 8 years... I was hard on vehicles back then. ;-) My
mother drove a 67 Cuda from new till it died of terminal cancer in the
mid 90's (the car, not mom... she's still kicking)

Whew, I thought it might have been the car. Other things to look out for
include an unrestrained infant rolling around in the back as you drive a
gazillion miles per hour through the outback.
