Aaron, I use D4's on all the toms - those are pretty good &
deep-sounding, too. In this song he only used the floor tom in
three small sections, but the main problem is: this particular
drummer hits his toms pretty lightly, as you can probably tell.
He's a good solid hitter on the kick & snare, which any
recordist appreciates, and he's all over the brass like the
fucking opening sequence of "2001", but for some reason he hits
his toms kinda soft.

If he's got anything over a 14", and you have a spare D6 or two... trust me,
give it a try :)
Might be that he's not smacking the toms because of elevation level, stroke
angle or tuning/head type. Just one drummer's opin though, but I've found
that the feedback from the head, shell and angle make a big difference in my
20 something years of shell experience.
Curious.... is he using deep shell toms? Lot of times those don't clear the
kick and have to be wedged to an uncomfortable position.

No, not at all! It was really pretty darn manageable with no
problem - listen to it, you'll see. I have a Paiste China that's
MUCH louder... if he had stuck that one there in that same
spot, then that might've been a problem.
