Hi Folks,
I'm one of the oldest PARISsaurs (I bought my 3 card 2 MEC system as soon as Ensoniq released them), so it was my greatest Christmas present to discover this forum and learn about Mike's new Xp driver.
I'm in the middle of putting my new studio together and the new drivers will make it possible to revitalize my good old PARIS gear, so I even bought a 4th EDS card from Jason Miles (old PARISiens must remember him).
I'd like to ask for your input before choosing the computer:
Should the new driver work on a 12 core dual CPU Opteron system under Xp SP2 and Win7 32? The 4 cards will be in a VirtuaVia (Magma-like) expansion chassis.
I'd appreciate the feedback from anyone who has an experience with AMD based dual CPU setups.
Thanks,
Endre

Hey Endre, welcome! Glad you found the place... As far as the choice of OS, Mike's multicore drivers work great under XP SP2; work on Win7 64-bit drivers was just announced last week (startling most of us, I'm sure) in this thread.
Getting a decade-old app like PARIS to boot in Win7 (a few generations of OS later than it was designed for) without bluescreening is quite a feat already, and Mike's cautiously optimistic. If there are no hidden show-stoppers I've got no doubt that his Win7 drivers would be up to the same standards as his XP drivers have been, but for now Win7 drivers are "one step at a time, no guarantees" and planning for a dual boot system (as it seems you're doing) is the safe bet.
The VirtuaVia stuff is tested and running great with PARIS (simpler than Magma, since there are no drivers to worry about).
As for the computer itself, the multicore drivers are new enough that we don't have a lot of data yet. Mike's observed that chipsets don't seem to matter to PARIS but they do seem to matter for expansion chassis; NVidia seems to have much better track counts and fewer problems than AMD.

Please do post your experiences, that would be very useful; our future plans include building a database so we can answer questions like this with more confidence.

I think the irony of PARIS suddenly becoming "leading edge" is something we'll all enjoy
