MOTU interfaces [message #71625] |

I'm thinking about using my old G4 w/ Digital performer to allow me access
to the new UAD-1 and Waves plugins while using Paris on my newer G4. I need
an interface for DP that'll have little or no latency. I'm thinking about
the 828 (firewire) or the 2408 MK. 3 (PCI card). Do any of you folks have
enough experience w/ them to advise me?
Thanks!

Hi Rick,
I think Gantt wants to run PARIS on his newer G4 and DP with a MOTU
interface on his older G4. That's the way I understood his question anyway.
He could run OSX on the DP machine, but the performance might not be great
on an older G4.
Anyway, I like the 828 MkII Firewire interface. The pre amps are pretty
clean and they have a decent amount of gain available. Actually, the 828 is
my "no color" pre amp right now. I've got 16 channels of Trident ixOne, an
HHB Fat Man II, and an Aphex 107, but they all are pretty "colorful" pres.
Until I can afford a Great River, Gracie, True Systems, etc., the 828 will
cover things.
MOTU's new UltraLite interface looks pretty nice also.

I have a MOTU 828MII, have used it with a G4 and now a dual G5. Very
solid piece of gear. Much better than the original 828, the 828MII is
reliable and well designed.

Hi Tony,
Yes, you're right - My thought is to run Paris on my new DP 1.25 gHz G4 in
OS 9.2.2 ans Digital Performer on my old 833 mHz G4. I'm hoping to be able
to use the Waves IR-L reverb and some of the UAD-1 plugins (like the Neve
EQ!!!) in real time. Is the latency of the 828 MkII low enough to pull that
off? I figure there'll be issues w/ the UAD-1 FX, since the card has it's
own latency issues. I can't understand how DJ manages to make it all work
in real time on his system!
Thanks,
Gantt

Hey Gene,
Do you think the latency is low enough to use the 2408 w/ DP as a real time
FX processor? Actually, I guess w/ reverb a little pre-delay wouldn't hurt.
I don't know about UAD-1 FX, given the card's own latency...
Thanks!

On my G5 with the buffer set to 128 in DP, I'm guessing approx. 3ms latency.
I've never bothered to find out how to check the exact figure as it's been
low enough that I don't really care. I don't know if an older G4 would run
well at that buffer setting though. I have a feeling not. With insert type
effects i.e. EQ's, Comps, etc., the whole track will be delayed with
whatever latency you have out and back in, and will need to be compensated
for when returning the send to the mix. With send type FX, Reverb,
Delay, etc. you can probably dial stuff in to work with no compensation,
unless you're trying to sync tempo delays or something like that. I haven't
actually messed with the type scenario you are asking about, so I can' t
give too much solid advice. I can only say that the 828 MkII is a solid
piece of gear and I would think with a good fast comp. you could do what
you're wanting to do. I would be leery about a 833 MHz G4 being fast enough
though. Sorry.
