Turn it on and it stops right away with
"Initializing USB controllers"

Can't even get to the BIOS.

I do have a wireless keyboard and mouse via
USB. Batteries maybe? The only other thing
USB is the Cubase dongle.

Tom

Pull the Cubase dongle & see if you still get that same error.

Otherwise, I doubt it's the batteries in the wireless keyboard
& mouse, because you should stil be able to get booted up under
those circumstances, the keys and/or mouse just wouldn't x-mit
a signal to the receiver modules.

Thanks Neil,
I unplugged both the Cubase dongle and the keyboard/mouse.
Booted fine with the PS2s that are also in use.
I am going to reinsert the USBs and let it find it's stinkin drivers.

I hate computers more than ever these days. Paris is down for the =
count.
Thanks again,
Tom

I just had to spring for another &*%^#!*(^% WC today. I've got so much =
crap daisy chained in my rig right now that I'm starting to have some =
problems with everything syncing up reliably. Part of it has to do with =
my Mytek A/D being part of the distribution chain. It doesn't get along =
with the RME MADI card very well. I found a good deal on a Lucid GenX-96 =
today so it's going to be my master clock distributing signal to 5 =
devices while it sends a WC feed to my regular Lucid GenX-6 which will =
distribute the WC signal to the other 6 devices. Now everything will =
have it's own separate WC feed and each device will be terminated.

It never ends.

I have an XP machine with Cubase something or other. Never had the patience
to get the latency low enough -- lost interest and went back to just Paris.
The Atari has been sitting here for a couple of years, just daring me to
turn it on.

So the other day I hooked up the Atari (with Cubase Version 3 - 1992) to
the Soundcanvas. Attached the ancient Roland midi controller. Took a while
remembering the commands and how the files worked.

Stayed up until 3am last night making stupid tracks. It's so simple. No hiccups.
Absolutely perfect midi timing. Monster 1MHZ processor into 2M of giant memory.
Tried to hook up a real moonitor to replace the aging mammoth b&w 12" screen,
but couldnt' find the right adapter. Oh well. No problem.

I stood there with my headphones on and jammed to these stupid tracks half
the night. Haven't had so much fun in I don't know when.

Ok, back to regular programming.

I use a Lucid GenX6-96, and EVERY RARE NOW & THEN my system
will de-clock... it's really very rare, though - maybe 2 or 3
times in the past year or so, and it's never de-clocked during
tracking - where I've had two RME Multifaces, plus a MOTU 8Pre
& a Mucusrite ISA 428 - locked & clocked off of the Lucid. Not
saying that there might not be better clocks out there, but
that model seems to be pretty stable & reliable, FWIW.

Call 'em stupid if you must, but if they're anything
like "Jeremy the Coelecanth" you KNOW we'll all want to
hear 'em! :)

Once they find the drivers (USB hardware) make sure you set a
system restore point - just in case something weird happens
after that. If it does, it probably has something to do with
some driver that's been installed AFTER the USB ones were
originally mapped/installed... my experience, at least, when I
had something kinda similar happen on my previous rig.
If this is the case, you'll need to find out what drivers you
may have installed after that & re-install them, as well...
ALSO: don't forget that you MIGHT need to de-install any
duplicate instances of RME firmware if you're using an RME
interface... an applet for this can be found on the RME/Synthax
site... are you, by any chance using any type of RME
interfacsia?

If I can't get the MADI to clock to the Lucid, then I can probably get the
Lucid to clock to the MADI. the MADI has an extremely nice clock, but I like
to be able3 to set the sample rate before I open Cubase and with the MADI,
it will default to the last sample rate it saw before closing the program.
this creates a scenario where I've got to startpuching puttons on the
various modules to create harmonious digital bliss and sometimes it will
cause a trainwreck, at least the way things are clocked right now. Getting
the Mytek into a slave role to the Lucid where it isn't directly interfacing
with the MADI card will likely be the ticket. those two devices have never
played nice. It worked fine with the HDSP 9652 and Multiface, but for some
reason, Mr. MADI and Ms. Mytek ain't compatible.

Morgan had a similar problem with interfacing Mytek and RME MADI cards so
it's a documented pre-existing condition.

I think I maybe should have mentioned that these appear in your
system registry. They can also be edited out manually without
too much trouble, but the applet is a much easier, one-shot
edit & it seems to work well. Lemme know if this is the case &
if so I can direct you to it or e-mail it to you (it's a free
utility) if need be.

OK, but Mytek & Lucid sync issues ain't necessarily a documented
pre-existing condition, are they (or are they?) If my Lucid de-
clocks or doens't look like it's locking upon boot-up, all I
have to do is flip the switch through the cycles, back to the
samplerate I need & it's there/locks fine... does your GenX not
do this?

ALSO... your system is more sophisticated than mine - you might
be a good candidate for some kind of front-end clocking &
converting like the Lavry Blue series & their CrystalLock
sync deal... even if you only get two channels of it for
overdubs & such.

I believe Don issued a challenge the other day...a light jazz version of something
that should be an illegal abomination in any civilized society. Stay tuned.

Dj, I haven't bought anything in a year ! November was my cubase system
purchase and all is cool. Get your stuff going and have a 1 year moratorium
on buying, hell, save for retirement even. hehe

DJ, with my presonus digimax fs, cubase controls their clock rates from its
project settings. will cubase not do that with your devices? when cubase
opens the clock rates change based on my project settings.

I'm late to the party here but I suggest NEVER using wireless key/mouse, not
even on an office machine. It's adding a layer of non-native drivers that
can really cause problems. If you need more distance get USB extender cables
(they're cheap) for the input devices.

I was in an uber hip NYC restaurant last week and heard a track that really
took the cake. Run the first few bars of 'Corcovado' through your head, the
original Getz/Gilberto version. I have a soft spot the size of a truck for
Astrud Gilberto but even I have to admit the original has some kitsch built
into it. Now imagine an early eighties Chuck Mangione doing the song. Not
the sorta cool Chuck, but the hour long TV special with the orchestra Chuck.
Now, pretend that a bunch of young GenX jazz players who've never had an
un-ironic thought in their lives and who more importantly have NEVER HEARD
THE GETZ/GILBERTO version. These players have the Chuck version played for
them and are told to do a super lounge/kitsch version for a lounge compilation.
That's what I heard. It really did suck so much it was kind of good, I have
to admit, and I don't take kindly to anybody trampling on my Astrud.

DJ is using several units, and as distribution amps. I don't care how
good a unit is, when you start using 3 of them things fall apart due to
slight variations in clock sync. Better to use *one* clock with
sufficient outputs to feed all the stuff at once.

My $.02CAD (0.0205478 USD at current exchange)

John/Neil

When I was using an HDSP 9652, I could use the Mytek as clock master. The
MADI card will not accept the Mytek as clock master so I have to slave the
Mytek to the MADI. This works fine but due to the large number of devices I
have to also slave, I need to take an AES feed off the Mytek into my Lucid
GenX-6 and then clock everything else from a simultaneous feed from the
Mytek WC output and the GenX-6 that is being synced to the Mytek so the
Mytek is still the central clearinghouse for the rest of the clock signal.
So the current clocking is as follows:

MADI > Mytek
Mytek BNC>AES 32 (terminated)
Mytek AES>GenX-6
GenX-6>Multiface (terminated)
GenX-6> ADI 4-DD (terminated)
GenX-6>ADI 8-DS (terminated)
GenX-6>ADI 8-DS (terminated)
GenX-6>ADI 4-DD (terminated)
GenX-6>ADI 648>ADI 8-DD>ADI8-DD in a daisy chained config-(terminated)

This all works perfectly at 44.1 KHz but it goes to crap at 88.2 because the
Mytek doesn't like to be slaved to the MADI at higher sample rates. The
Mytek worked fine as master clock to or slaved from the HDSP 9652, but not
with the MADI. It also works fine slaving to a GenX-6 so I'll likely have
the following WC chain:

GenX-96>MADI card
GenX-96>AES 32
GenX-96>ADI 648
GenX-96>ADI 8-DD
GenX-96>ADI 8-DD
GenX-96>Mytek
Mytek AES out>GenX-6
Mytek BNC open for additional device
GenX-6>Multiface
GenX-6>ADI 4-DD
GenX-6>ADI 4-DD
GenX-6>ADI 8-DS
GenX-6>ADI 8-DS
GenX-6>Open for additional device

All devices will be terminated.

As I said, the Mytek locks up perfectly to a Lucid because the clock is set
before the computer boots up but if the Mytek is problematic slaving/and
regenerating WC signal for any reason, I've got enough BNC outs on both
Lucid boxes to just slave the GenX-6 to the GenX-96 and get the Mytek out of
the loop as a distro device. I doubt I'll have problems with this

so you see...........as with my Paris rig, I've managed to simplify things
again with the new RME rig.

A USB "extension" is barely usable at 15'... look for a USB
"repeater"... much better and they can be daisy chained for additional
length:

I've got 5 of these on my two studio DAWs.

They work great (and are locally available for me...an unusual occurrence
here in the land that time forgot.

David,

The only reason I'm taking the route I'm taking right now is because it has
worked for me in the past and I had all but one device already here (the
GenX-96) I got the GenX-96 for a ridiculously good price. I could EBay it
and get my money out of it in a heartbeat so I figured I'd give it a shot
since it has worked in the past. If this situation doesn't work, I'll be
dumping the two Lucid boxes and looking at other options. Which rosendahl
unit would you recommend? I'm not familiar with them. I will need "at
least" 11 outputs on the unit.

Thanks,

Deej

Hmmmm........this looks like it would do the trick. Relatively inexpensive
too........well.......in a world where everything costs lots of
money.....it's "relatively" expensive". 12 x BNC outs....YES!!!.......that
means I can buy even more crap to hook up to this than I've got now.

This is the one we are using here:

http://www.rosendahl-studiotechnik.de/nanoclocks.html

12 outputs, works REALLY well. Attached is my digital signal flow for
the room. Occasionally I use HD for system clock, or the WIF... The
Nanoclock will generate clock or distribute from two transformer
isolated sources.

David.

Thanks Dave,

Your digital matrix looks familiar. ;o)

I'm going to give the Lucid route a go since it's on it's way here already
and since it's previously proven (but not with MADI.......the MADI system is
a different sorta' beast I'm finding) and if there is no joy, it's gonna be
Nano time. One thing that is encouraging is that with both Lucids, I can
eliminate the Mytek as a distro amp and just slave it directly to one of the
BNC feeds out of the Lucid. That would still give me 11 BNC outs (off the 2
x Lucid boxes) for 11 separate devices.

;o)

David,=20
That's the type I'm using. It's an active extension.
I didn't know they were called 'repeaters' though.
I need about 25'- 30'.

Dj-

I've been needing one (or more) of these for years without even knowing they
existed. Thanks for the link!
