OK y'all, since I know there are a few guitar heads out there. As most of
you know, I'm very much into the fancy new stuff when it comes to my music.
I'm into hip hop, breakbeats, dub step, software synths, and all of that.
But, after I pop in the phone booth and emerge as my alter ego, I also play
geetar in a rock'n'roll band. With guitar gear I'm positively Holocene in
my tastes. For almost ten years I've played the same amp, a Top Hat Club
Royale, basically an AC-30 top boost knockoff preamp with an AC-15 power
section. I've usually put a power soak on it and played it full out.

So, today I finally had a chance to really try out the Savage that a friend
is selling. In my not so humble opinion I think I've always had some of the
best guitar tone I've ever heard. More than once someone has offered to buy
my Top Hat from me on the spot. The Savage is AT LEAST as good as the Top
Hat. And, more importantly, the most stunning example of class A 6V6 amplification
I have heard this side of a lovingly restored tweed Deluxe owned by another
friend. It doesn't do clean at a level that would be useful outside a studio
(though it's clean tones are spectacular, I think it would make a superb
Grant Green sounding jazz amp), but the breakup goes from gorgeous Deluxe
to surprisingly Marshall sounding when dimed.

A lot of amp makers blackball their one really low wattage model with a crappy
sounding eight inch speaker and a sub par cabinet, I think because it's just
harder to justify a high price tag on a low watt amp. It shouldn't be that
way, but in the very masculine 'size matters' world of guitar players the
6 or 10 watt amp should be cheap. Mad props to Savage for doing things right
with the Macht series, which is a dream for those (like me) who love power
amp grit over everything else.

I'm running them parallel now and it's SICK how good they sound. Not sure
how I'll mic them for recording but I'm able to back off on the crunch coming
from the Top Hat and get more grind from the Savage, letting each amp do
what it does best. It's one hell of a roar.

Thad,
Post a clip of this monster! Sounds great by your description
but you are a good writer by nature! I'd love to hear it being an
AC-30 lover from way back.

I still use your Cubase 2 book too.

Ok,

I know you like power amp distortion, but try this:

Take a good OD pedal

I like this one:

http://www.barberelectronics.com/directdrive.htm

and run it into this

http://www.foxroxelectronics.com/
(click on Paradox TZF)

then run that into both of your amps.

Now set the TZF up for a fixed filter (no modulation)
and adjust the depth and manual controls...

You will find a setting that beats the best you got before
by 100%

!

It's just like playing with two mics on one amp and getting
the distances *perfect* and all of a sudden the tone just grabs
you by short hairs...

Only you can do it live.

Un-freaking-believable tone doth result...

Yeah yeah the TZF does all the Hendrix flange-O-rama stuff
well, and that's a cool sound too, but it does this adjustable
stereo comb filter thing like nothing else, and the tone simply
has to be heard to be believed...

I'll post plenty of clips soon. This amp will be getting a _major_ workout
in the upcoming Mold Monkies tracking sessions. I'm not exactly sure how.
Live it will be part of a two amp rig, but recording I might choose one or
the other depending on the part. But I'll get y'all sounds, it's pretty special.

Hmmmm, very interesting. For OD I'm pretty happy with my Fulltone OCD. Haven't
tried it with the new Savage but I've been using it for a few years with
the Top Hat. It's a very friendly OD for already gritty class A amps. I was
going to use one of my (unused) Line 6 modeling pedals as a stereo splitter
but the flanger might be a much better option. Considering the rest of my
pedal board (Fulltone Clyde wah -> Moog analog delay -> OCD) it might 'fit'
better.

Nevertheless, as an old geetar geezer, the Savage really is something.

BTW - the other geetar player in the band uses one of the direct drives through
a very nice sounding Bassman and it is a great sounding pedal. I think maybe
more suited to a clean Fender sound than what I get with the full open amps
I use, but still a very fine pedal. The OCD really does kill with the Top
Hat. I think you're a Hiwatt guy at heart, if memory serves, and I bet the
direct drive would be wonderful with those amps.

I want an OCD...

I'm sure it would work fine for this process. You do want a bit more grind
than you think you do, when using the TZF,

All the distortion needs to come from the pedal for the best tone.
Counterintuitive, since my favorite sound is my Hiwatt cranked, but
very true. When dialed in, this setup kills even the Hiwatt...

BTW, I should add that this process sounds terrific with any two amps
I have ever heard. I've tried it with 2 different Hiwatts, a THD Univalve,
and a JCM2000 Marshall, in different combinations, and all of them did
very well.

Interesting, but the Barber Small Fry, which I usually love, does not
give enough extra harmonics to really work well with the TZF.

That Savage sounds nice. Now I will have to try one...

Are you just putting the two amps out of phase? I'd like to try that as long
as I don't get vertigo at high levels. Of course I never play at high levels
so no worries.

Personally I have not used a pedal since about '82 when I bought my first
Boogie. Now I use a Vox Tonelab (which I guess you could call a pedal) into
a Boogie Satellite, which is just a stereo extender combo with a minimal
preamp. Sounds bitchin'. I can get very clean for jazz to full on
feedback-my-335 distortion (but still at a reasonable level).

Recently i sold my old MXR Dynacomp and Distortion+ on ebay. I was amazed
anyone wanted them, but it was a lively auction. The only pedal I would use
today if i were not too lazy is a TC chorus. Of course I use a wah wah when
I got the funk.

Have fun knobulating!
