Remember the Paris PC I mentioned I built? The one that
installed Paris perfectly & booted it up correctly, first time,
with no issues? Well, now I can't get it to do anything beyond
boot into Windows... knew it was too good to be true!

Last night I was going to try what someone suggested & import
the Cubase Stems into Paris & sum them there, so I samplerate-
converted them using r8Brain, saved them to a USB thumb drive
and went over to the Paris PC & right-clicked on the desktop to
create a new folder to put them in... ERROR! (it read something
to the effect of: "Windows Explorer has encountered an error and
must shut down") hmmm... weird - OK, let it reboot. Tried it
again - same thing. Reboot again... this time I just inserted
the thumb drive & opened that up - OK, so far, so good, it let
me go to "My Computer" & open that drive, but when I tried to
copy the files to a folder on the computer, I got the same
error. By that time it was late, so I just started looking up
Mac & PTHD prices online.

Hmmmm..........wow!! sounds like an issue with the windows install, but I do
understand your frustration.

WinME has been sitting on this hard drive ever since I bought
the original off-the-rack PC that it came with... only thing
Windows had to do was find the drivers for the different hardware
(mobo/CPU/Video Card) when I first botted it up... took a like
two reboots to finish the job, but it worked fine the other day
& I had it on & running for quite a few hours without a glitch.

So I have no idea - tonite it's back to the SX PC exclusively
for some MIDI tracking, so I'll deal with this other POS thing
later. My Ruger P-90 might be the right tool for the job. lol

Tried a P90 once... grip was too big for my hands. Went for the H&K
P7 instead - never regretted it. Absolutely freakin' sweet piece of
hardware.

Rod, nope, all of a sudden something's messed-up with the
Active Desktop (I'm pretty sure I've narrowed it down to that,
or perhaps a graphics-related issue but I haven't figured out
what the remedy is yet).

Here's what happens:

1.) PC boots up fine, no probs, Windows launches normally.

2.) Programs/applications, including Paris, all appear to
launch just fine (tried starting a number of them to see if I
could get any of them to glitch... this PC's pretty stripped-
down, so there's not many things on there) EXCEPT (so far) for
an item in the Control Panel icons called "Intel Graphics",
when I double-click on that one I get the same error as when I
right-click on the Desktop - that error window states: "RUNTIME
ERROR - Explorer has encountered a problem and must shut down."
(might not be the exact phrasing but that's the gist of it).
Now, I don't HAVE an Intel video driver loaded - at least not to
my knowledge... the card has an ATI graphics package, so maybe
I need to look for an Intel video driver somewhere &
disable/unload it?

3.) Oddly enough, if I open a window such as "My Computer"
and then right-click inside there, I don't get the same problem
(which was the same runtime error as I mentioned above). The
error upon right-clicking only seems to occur on the active
desktop. I can right-click inside a window like "My Computer"
or "My Documents" & create a new folder & whatnot with no
problems.

Which I suppose, is not as big of a problem as I first thought,
but it's still weird, and since I tend use the right-click
function a lot, I need to figure it out... that's too much of
a habit for me to break at this point.

Anyone know if the "Runtime" referred to could be a Java
Runtime error? This PC has an older version of the Java applet
on there, but since it will probably never see the internet in
it's current configuration as a Paris PC, I could probably
completely unload the Java stuff without any problems, yes?

Or is the Intel video driver the most likely suspect at this
stage & I should try to find that one & disable it?

Neil......if you can click on the desktop and on this icon and get the same
error, I'd say you've found the gremlin. I'd uninstall the Intel thingie and
see if this clears things up. If not, your graphics controller may need to
be uninstalled/reinstalled. Graphics cards are usually the culprit in this
kind of situation.........and they respond well to 9mm *accellerators*.
