MEC with 75 ohm termination [message #87229]

Hi group,

Per this groups opinions and experience, I couldn't decide on a clock or a
DAC so I ordered them both. It stings $$$$ but I should be a happy camper
come the weekend.

The Big Ben with a 3' quality cable is on the way and I don't know whether
the MEC is un-terminated or terminated. I have the MEC booklet but it
doesn't state it. For the time being the I just need one word clock out of
the Big Ben to the MEC. If un-terminated, then the Big Ben user's manual
says I need to connect a BNC "T" with a 75 ohm termination. If the MEC is
correctly terminated, then I can just connect the clock in and fire it up.
For now the MEC is the last and only interface in the clock chain and per
the BB manual it states that the last item needs to be terminated.

What do you guys and gals know about this? Do I need the "T" and 75 ohm
terminator or is the MEC correctly terminated?

I used a terminator cap on my MEC outputs and they were happier for it. I
don't know about the
BB. You do not want to "chain" your devices if you can help it. Run a
separate BNC cable to each device you want to clock. Make the cables of
equal length if possible.

Yes, make sure you use true 75-ohm BNC cables, there are also
50-ohm cables out there with BNC connectors out there, and
those will f*ck up your world from a clocking standpoint.

Cables coded RG-58 are 50-ohm, and RG-59's are 75-ohm.

No, just the output. I have never been a fan of using T's in word
clock or video cabling.

Hi group,

I picked up a 75 ohm termination from Kiesub electronics and I put a meter
to it. It only reads 1 ohm. I thought it was a resister load termination
but is it possible that it is a inductive or capacitive load and therefore
can not be accurately testing with an ohm meter?

Just run a straight feed from the BB to the MEC input. You don't need a "T"
for the MEC input. Use a 75ohm terminator cap on the MEC out.
