Hi Mark - we've had no word, and we've been quite concerned. The NG went down in the first week of May and hasn't been back up since.

Still, I'm not inclined to count the NG out yet - Kim's surprised us before. I'll hold the fort in his absence and we'll all continue to hope for the best for Kim. Please let us know if you get a reply!

- Kerry

Outside of concerns about Kim's welfare.... I would like to get NNTP back up and running.

The following is a really clean compact threaded Web interface to an NNTP server:

http://web-news.sourceforge.net/

Here is a link to a site using it:

http://news.thecube.ca/newsgroups.php

It's written in PHP. If Kerry can stand up this software, I will stand up an NNTP server.

This would give us the best of all worlds as far as I'm concerned.. FUD Forums interface for those who prefer it. A very compact threaded interface much like our old beloved site. NNTP access for newsreader users, and as a bonus, RSS (of course this site seems to already do that).

Let me know if there is any interest.

Chuck

Well hey guys... I got good news and bad news.... and some stuff in between.

First, I have spent considerable time into ascertaining whether or not Kim was first of "okay" and secondly, what he's been up to and how that may have affected the newsgroup. After hundreds of emails outgoing and incoming, a clear picture has emerged. Unfortunately, I cannot share the *entire* picture.

I have learned that Kim has some decent caring loving friends all around the planet who love and care about him. A few of them are now my friends, too.

Without divulging too much personal info, Kim made some decisions regarding his health around 10 months ago which went against the advice of doctors and friends and eventually his employer.

Kim became increasingly despondent toward and isolated from most (but not all) of his friends over the last year and eventually just up and left AU for continental Europe for a musical walk-about of sorts. I've established that only one or two folks have had contact with him since he left AU about 3 months ago. So he is still alive and is working through some rather serious health issues. The best contact between Kim and any one person is less frequent than once every 3 to 4 weeks and is mostly minimal.

Kim left his gig with the radio station some time ago on not-so-good terms. At this point in time, only one person knows where he is and will not say where he is exactly, or what his plans are. This person did, however, say that she has communicated our concern collect to Kim as his friends. I made sure to let EVERYONE know that WE were all concerned for him first... everything else be damned.

My belief is that Kim simply has far too much troubling his mind right now to bother with any NG. Based on what I have learned (but cannot share here) I do NOT believe that the old NG will EVER be back up and running. I'd love nothing more than to be proven wrong but that is my increasingly instinctual and logical conclusion for whatever it is worth to you guys.

I say we move on to another host. Appears to be some desire and willingness to do that.

I'll repost this as a new topic herein.

Regards,
Mark Wilson

Mark, thank you SO much for posting that. Kim's safety and happiness are the prime concern.

As far as I'm concerned he went far and above the call of duty keeping the NG together for so long and helping make these forums possible; he'll never "owe an explanation" for simply choosing to move on. He already did his duty, and far beyond, these many years.

My best wishes for a full recovery are with him, as well as my hopes we'll see him again in the fullness of time.
